Call the Midwife saw Dr Kevin McNulty's pethidine addiction finally reached breaking point in last night's emotional finale.

Lee Armstrong's Dr McNulty had become dependant on the painkilling opioid which he was initially given to treat his pain after an old shoulder injury. But the young doctor's usage spiralled into a secret addiction, which prompted him to collapse at the hospital during last night's episode.

Fans are hoping that Kevin McNulty will be rehabilitated so he will return for the Christmas special and next year's season 10.

Viewers wished him a speedy recovery, with one hoping for a future storyline that features him wooing and marrying Nurse Val (Jennifer Kirby), who lost her Aunt Elsie (Ann Mitchell) to cancer in the finale.

One fan implored: "Please, please can we have Lee Arms in series 10 of Call the Midwife? I've grown quite attached to Dr McNulty."

Another fan suggested that the Turners may adopt McNulty now.

Some also shared their upset when Stephen McGann's Dr Turner exposes the injection scars and bruises on McNulty's arm as he treats him.

"The world is full of fragile people Kevin, and when we try to mend them, it can break us," Dr Turner tells McNulty.

"Have you ever been broken?" Kevin replies, to which Turner tells him: "Yes, and I became a better doctor."

So it would seem like there could be hope for Dr McNulty in the future.

Viewers were also loving a brief respite from all the heartbreaking storylines when Sister Monica Joan and Sister Hilda taught Dr McNulty how to dance.

Call the Midwife will return later this year for the Christmas special. Season 10 will be back next year.
