Call the Midwife stars on how the weather made filming really tricky

The Call the Midwife cast have revealed the weather troubles their experienced while filming on location for season 13.

Speaking ahead of the season premiere later this week, Stephen McGann, Georgie Glen, series creator Heidi Thomas and newcomer Renee Bailey revealed the cast and crew got unlucky while filming on the beach during storm Agnes.

"It was hilarious. We went to West Wittering [beach] and they'd gone the week before and it'd been cracking, beautiful," McGann, who plays Dr Turner, explained (via Radio Times).

"But sometimes you get really unlucky and it was one of those days where you can't change it, all the logistics were there, but it was just windy and mad."

He continued: "And the hair. With the salt and the wind, I looked like one of those old Irish uncles. The hair just went up. We were all cowering. It was a real challenge. It was tough."

Filming in the high winds proved to be particularly treacherous for the crew, with Bailey revealing that the scenes director developed an eye infection after the shoot. "It wasn’t just a grey day, it was terrible. Sand in the eyes," added Glen (Miss Higgins).

Explaining how the crew ended up filming on a beach during a storm, Thomas revealed that the filming schedule had been established months prior.

"In episode 5, I had the bright idea that we should have a community outing to the seaside," she said, adding that filming had taken place for five days during the storm.

"I was literally so scared of the cast by this point I said, 'I actually don't think I'm going to be able to make it'. The rushes, sky is grey, the sea is leaden, it looks like a black and white movie," Thomas continued.

"I would like to offer my personal apologies to the cast for that."

Set to premiere on January 7, the first episode of Call the Midwife will see viewers introduced to Bailey's character Joyce Highland as a series of new pupils make their way to Nonnatus House for a scheme which could revolutionise the birthing process, much to the delight of Dr Turner.

Meanwhile the nuns scramble to support Doreen Challis, a young woman with cerebral palsy, after she discovers her pregnancy.

Call the Midwife airs series 13 premieres on Sunday, January 7 at 8pm on BBC One.
