From Good Housekeeping

Call The Midwife season 9 is almost over, meaning the women of Nonnatus House will soon be leaving our screens for the best part of 2020.

The series finale is set to be an emotional one given it's become apparent Dr McNulty is struggling with a prescription drug addiction, Nurse Crane is finding it hard to deal with her many commitments and Nurse Dyer's grandmother in prison is suffering with ill health.

Preview pictures released by the BBC show Valerie's struggles and hint that rough times are still ahead for Dr McNulty.

While we don't know exactly how the final episode will play out, we do know that Call The Midwife will of course return on Christmas Day 2020 for a festive episode before launching into a new season in early 2021, as per tradition.

Excitingly, the show's creator Heidi Thomas is already sharing details about what we can expect.

While last year's festive episode was set in the remote Outer Hebrides and previous specials have been located in West Sussex and South Africa, this year will be a little different.

"We are staying in Poplar," Thomas told Radio Times.

"We are not going anywhere cold, we are not going anywhere wet, we’re not going anywhere far away. It’s very much Poplar-based, I’m writing it at the moment," she explained.

“And there will be snow and there will be tinsel and there will be trees and there will be Christmas dinner at Nonnatus House. And beyond that it’s a secret!”

One thing's for sure, there'll be plenty of heart-warming story lines and new babies brought into the world.

Call The Midwife season nine concludes Sunday at 8pm on BBC One.
