With the crisp autumn weather now creeping in, we're excited to embrace the latest fashion trends hitting the runaways this autumn/winter. While many of us will be sad to be packing away our summer wardrobe for another year, here to help you welcome in the new season is the burgundy fashion trend.

And there is no better example of someone nailing the colour of the season than Jennifer Grey, in her fabulous monochrome look for the BFI Film Festival in London on Sunday (13 October).

The star was autumnal-chic in a long-sleeve, wine-coloured top and sequin midi skirt in a similar burgundy shade. Jennifer's shimming look signalled the start of the upcoming party season as she attended a special presentation of A Real Pain during the 68th BFI festival this weekend.

While burgundy is known for its intensity and once associated with the Victorian era, recently fashion designers have shown us how to style the hue today and many fashionistas believe it's the shade du jour.

Set to become a new autumn favourite, burgundy covers everything from deep oxblood shades to rich merlot colours - there are so many variations of this deep, reddish-brown hue.

With many of high-street brands jumping on the burgundy bandwagon, it's truly a colour we can all embrace in our wardrobe and is an easy trend to dip your toe into this cosy season.

An elegant and alluring alternative to navy, burgundy will add a sense of quiet luxury to any outfit.

Also, what makes it different to that pop of red we saw last year and the red theory that has been taking over our Instagram feeds, burgundy is more liveable colour and has this understated drama to it, without being too in your face.

Good Housekeeping's Fashion Director reveals to us why she thinks burgundy is an indulgent shade that is worthy of all the hype this season.

"If your wardrobe is dominated by neutrals, dark, rich hues of burgundy will feel more wearable, even to the colour-shy. The colour looks great paired with black, cream, camel, grey and denim, making it a super adaptable trend to buy into this season. However, if you’re feeling brave, sister shades of burgundy and red also look incredible together too."

"Seeing as it's the colour to be seen in this autumn, the 'fizz buys' I suggest purchasing are either a burgundy bag or coat. The epitome of elegance, it's a great colour to update your wardrobe staples."
