Last spring, Bulgari celebrated its 140th anniversary with the unveiling of Aeterna, a collection of more than 500 design masterpieces in high jewelry, watches, bags, and fragrances. Feted in Rome with an event at the Terme di Diocleziano, the celebration counted Anne Hathaway, Isabella Rossellini, Carla Bruni, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas in attendance. What was the standout among the stars? The Serpenti Sapphire Echo necklace, fashioned in white gold and featuring dual 37-carat, pear-cut Sri Lankan sapphires plucked from an archival piece from the 1930s that once belonged to an Italian noblewoman.

It’s wearable art, with vivid blue gems suspended as pendants and attached to each serpent head by a round-cut diamond. But its “wow” moment comes when the necklace maker reveals a twist as functional as it is fashionable: The sapphires can also be worn separately as a pair of earrings, allowing the graceful drape of Bulgari’s iconic snake motif to take center stage. This duality speaks to Bulgari’s commitment to the spirit of reinvention, from one noblewoman to the next. But also, it’s proof that the Roman maison understands that the best things in life come in pairs.
