Arguably, all cheese boards are delicious, no matter what they look like. But nowadays, people on social media are toting ones that are beautifully designed and made with all the right fixings. It seems simple, but I can assure you from personal experience, it’s not. Crafting an Instagram-worthy cheeseboard takes a lot of creativity, a little patience and a plan. However, that’s where the Cheese By Numbers Method comes in.
The Cheese By Numbers Method started out as an Instagram account created by Marissa Mullen, who then turned the concept into a book called “That Cheese Plate Will Change Your Life: Creative Gatherings and Self-Care with the Cheese By Numbers Method.”
You’ve probably heard of the color by numbers coloring books, where pictures provide numbers indicating where to put each color to create the ideal image. Well, this is like that, but you can eat your creation when you’re done because it’s made with 1) cheese, 2) meat, 3) produce, 4) crunch, 5) dip and 6) garnish.

In the book, Mullen walks you through step-by-step on how to create a scrumptious looking and tasting board. In fact, there are 50 easy-to-make cheese plates and some were even created with different dietary preferences in mind.
“My hope is that you can feel a sense of ease by taking the guesswork out of a timeless appetizer. You don’t need to be a professional food stylist or chef to make a cheese plate — you can easily create something beautiful to impress your guests and your self!” Mullen writes in the intro to her book.

However for Mullen, cheese boards aren’t just about eating, they’re also a form of self-care. And as cheesy as that may sound, hear her out:
“We care for ourselves when we allow ourselves the time, energy and space to practice or learn about — or indulge in — the things that we love the most. These are the things that bring us joy and make us feel connected to our most authentic selves and to others. For me, that thing has always been cheese,” she writes.
So whether cheese is your own form of self-care or simply a way to bring people together, there’s no harm in putting in a little extra effort to make not only your stomach happy but your eyes and mind too.
