The Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot could actually be happening
Prepare for a trip down memory lane as the sequel to a much-loved 1990s drama is said to be on the way. A reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is reportedly in the pipeline, almost three decades after the original series first arrived on TV screens. Sarah Michelle Gellar is expected to return to the title role of Buffy Summers, a high school cheerleader who learns she is a vampire hunter. Find out what else we know about the next chapter of the hit TV show below.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot: Is it happening?
The reboot is "nearing a pilot order from Hulu," according to a report by Deadline. Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao is said to be on board to direct the pilot, written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. The legendary country singer Dolly Parton is set to oversee the project as as executive producer. Her company Sandollar produced the original series from 1997 to 2003.
Andreeva added: "Beyond the pilot order, I hear the reboot is starting a writers room soon, a sign that Hulu and the studios have high expectations for the project going to series."
Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot: Plot
The original show followed Buffy as she learned to fight vampires and demons with the help of her Watcher and her friends, also known as the "Scooby Gang", which included Willow Rosenberg, played by Alyson Hannigan and Xander Harris (Nicholas Brendon). There are very few details about what's in store for the potential new series, but Variety's report suggests that "it would focus on a new slayer and Gellar would appear in a recurring role rather than leading the series."
Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot: Release date
There's been no word on when a new Buffy series might be ready for release, but as it's only in pilot stage, there might be a while to wait.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot: Cast
In December last year, Gellar, who joined the Dexter prequel Original Sin, shared that she was on board with the idea of a Buffy sequel in an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show.
"It’s funny, I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect,” she explained. "But watching Sex and the City and seeing Dexter, and realising there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, 'Well, maybe.'"
It's not clear who else would join the cast at this stage, but here's hoping for plenty of 90s nostalgia. We'll add more details as they're confirmed.
