Like Broadchurch but darker: The Crow Girl is our latest TV obsession
If you’re tired of flicking through channels trying (and failing) to find something decent to watch, we’ve got news for you: Paramount+ is where it’s at. More specifically, the streamer’s latest spine-tingling psychological drama, The Crow Girl. It’s pacy, it’s bleak and it’s absolutely brilliant.
Here’s how the chilling story goes: DCI Jeanette Kilburn (Eve Myles) has a murder investigation on her hands and it’s unlike anything she’s dealt with before. It starts with just one body: beaten, mummified, full of the anaesthetic Lidocaine – and then dumped at a random public location around Bristol. But then, more start to show up.
Whoever the killer is, they want to be found (they’re leaving the bodies in public places, after all) – but why? And who is it? Cue the arrival of psychotherapist Dr Sophia Craven (Katherine Kelly), who DCI Kilburn enlists the help of to hunt the killer. As the body count rises, they begin to uncover a world of historic abuse, murder and police corruption.
Eve Myles has described the series as “brutal” and “uncomfortable” and we’d have to agree. Think Broadchurch, only darker – and we don’t say that lightly. If you’re yet to watch it, here’s everything you need to know about the series…
What’s The Crow Girl about?
Based on the best-selling novel by Erik Axl Sund (the pen name of Swedish writers Jerker Erikson and Håkan Axlander Sundquist), The Crow Girl follows DCI Jeanette Kilburn (Myles), as she investigates the grisly killings of several teenage boys, each of whom are found battered and beaten across Bristol.
Faced with very little evidence and mounting pressure to solve the case, she turns to prime suspect Carl Lowry's psychotherapist Dr Sophia Craven for a fresh take on the situation. But as the killer draws closer to home, the pair find themselves in a race against the clock to solve the mystery.
Leads Eve and Katherine are brilliant together and Eve has revealed that her co-star's casting was key to her decision to take on the role.
"I was sent the first three episodes and my agent said: 'They really want you to play Sophia.' I thought: 'Oh, a psychiatrist; I haven't played one of those,'" she has said.
"I read the first episode and rang my agent straight back and said: 'Who's playing Jeanette?' because I felt as though this show rested on her shoulders and it could only be as good as the actress playing her.
"When he said: 'Eve Myles,' I accepted it before I read the rest. I stand by it as one of the most fabulous decisions I've made, because the show is brilliant.
