Hair trends come and go but the quest for hair volume is something that will remain eternally classic. With such a range of volume building products available, it’s tricky to work out the best way to add volume to your hair.

It’s not just about backcombing though. Today, we’re sifting through the noise and bringing you the TOP tips for how to get thicker looking hair!

Plumping Shampoo

Could fuller looking hair be as easy as changing your shampoo? We’re a big fan of the L'Oreal Fibrology range from £1.99, which uses Filloxane to fill and reinforce the hair shaft.

Available in shampoo, mask and a serum, a dose of this wonderful, patented stuff is absorbed into your hair and plumps it up. The Filloxane builds up over time for thicker feeling hair with every wash. It’s proof that results don’t have to be expensive.

Clever Colouring

You can use colouring techniques to create the illusion of volume. Lyndell Mansfield, Colour Expert for Schwarzkopf LIVE says “The trick to making hair look fuller with colour is to use various shades and tones sectioned throughout the hair – be it blonde, red, brunette, pink or blue, highlighted or low-lighted! One dimensional colour does not catch the light in the same way that multi-dimensional colour does and it’s the light that makes hair seem fuller and thicker.”

If you’re bored of traditional highlights, why not inject some colour with the Live XXL Ultra Brights £4.00 – a high pigment cream that adds vibrant colour to bleached highlights.

Towel Dry Your Hair

Hair is super vulnerable and prone to damage when it is wet so drying your hair naturally and gently makes a huge difference to how it looks. Be gentle with your hair and pat dry instead of rubbing and blasting with heat.

For those of us with long hair, being told to towel dry isn’t normally an option but we love the AQUIS essentials hair towel £30. Just wrap your hair up in one of their lightweight towels or turbans and let the super absorbent material do the work!

This Californian designed hair towel is made of Equitex, a innovative fabric woven from super-fine fibres with superior water wicking capabilities. This leads to gentle drying without any friction, helping to reduce split ends and breakage.

Scalp Skincare

You may have never considered a scalp-care routine but healthy hair starts from healthy foundations and a balanced scalp will result in stronger, more resilient hair with less fallout. Less fallout equals a thicker head of hair.

Scalp skincare is made easy with the Nioxin Night Density Treatment £31.99, a leave-in treatment that helps to balance and protect the scalp and prevent oxidation. Think of it as a night cream for your scalp. It might be another step to add to your night routine but it’s worth it. To Brush or Not?

Did you know we lose 50-100 hairs a day (don’t worry, the average person has about 100,000 hairs on their head which keep growing in a repeating cycle). Although brushing can promote healthier hair, harsh brushing and detangling actually causes physical stress to the hair, leading to breakage and MORE hair fallout.

Reduce the tugging on knotty hair by investing in a Wet Brush £12. This retro looking hairbrush looks deceptively normal but is amazing at removing tangles for wet or dry hair, thanks to its flexible bristles. Perfect for those of you who think that a Tangle Teezer reminds you of a horse brush and need a handled brush!

A Half Hair Piece

For those of you not ready to commit to extensions but need something better than a backcomb. The Uplift from Hot Hair from £39, is a clever little hair piece that clips onto the crown of your head to give you the volume you need, without having to mess around with hairsprays.

The best thing about it that can then adjust hidden wires in the piece to push up the volume, or keep it as a natural looking lift. It’s available in 12 different colours too so blends into most hair colours - no one will know but you.

Hair Styling Tips

“Mousse is your secret weapon” according to Paul Falltrick, award-winning hair expert and Matrix Global Design Team Member. “The airy formula provides featherweight hold and creates gorgeous body.” We love the Matrix Oil Wonders Volume Rose Mousse £10.75, an ideal product for adding density and volume to fine hair.

How do we add volume when heat styling? Paul says, “When blow-drying your hair, always start at the front to add more volume, then allow your hair to cool down before blow-drying each section underneath.”

Better Back Combing

An absolute classic technique, if you absolutely can’t live without back-combing then invest in the Lee Stafford My Big Fat Backcomber £3.99 and comb in long strokes from tip to root.

It does exactly what the name suggests and is the essential tool for adding some va-va-voom to your hair. It’s a unique, multi-prong comb that achieves big volume in fewer strokes so is much kinder to your hair.

It comes with a skinny tail comb for precision sectioning, and is anti-static, heat and chemical resistant as well. A MUST for your big-hair brush collection.
