Bridget Jones creator shares exciting update on fourth movie
Bridget Jones fans assemble: it seems that a fourth movie is in the works.
Author Helen Fielding has confirmed she is working on a new cinematic chapter in the saga of Renée Zellweger's down-on-her-luck, stubbornly romantic heroine.
The writer of Bridget Jones's Diary and The Edge of Reason – given the adaptation treatment in 2001 and 2004 respectively – hinted at her novel Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy being next.
"Yes, I'm working on it and I really hope it will happen," Fielding told Radio Times magazine.
"Every film that gets made is a miracle – it's really difficult to make films happen and to make them good. But I'd love to see it on the screen," she added.
2016's Bridget Jones's Baby wasn't based on Mad About the Boy, but was instead an adaptation of columns Fielding wrote for The Independent between 2005 and 2006.
Rumours about Bridget gracing our screens again soon have been circulating for years now, with Zellweger often being asked about a possible return.
In April, the actress admitted adoring the character and her signature "self-deprecating sort of determination", while teasing she'd be down to reprise the role.
"I love her. And I think it's really rare to get to follow a character through different stages in her life," she told People.
"And in a way that we find her relatable, because she parallels our own life experiences at that time. Yeah, I hope so. I mean, Helen did write another book, so there's that."
While we can't say when Bridget will make her hotly-anticipated comeback at this stage, or who else is involved, knowing that Fielding is working on a script is undoubtedly good news.
