Bridgerton stars Adjoa Andoh and Golda Rosheuvel have detailed their experiences of working with their character's younger selves for Queen Charlotte.

The upcoming prequel series, which is due to premiere on Netflix on 4 May, focuses on the titular character’s formative years as she ascends to the throne and rises to power.

Adjoa and Golda, who play Lady Danbury and Queen Charlotte respectively on the parent show, spoke to press about working with the young performers – Arsema Thomas and India Amarteifio – who play the characters in their youth.

“Arsema is just beautiful and I love her,” began Andoh. “It was so fantastic. We had lovely chats on the phone and we talked about the character and the history - how that person would have been in that world at that time.

Arsema asked me stuff about how I felt about Lady Danbury, what I did with the character, how I thought she navigated the world and we sort of worked backwards,” she continued. “As an actor [it is] a gift and a rare opportunity to talk to someone who’s playing a younger version of you.”

Golda echoed the sentiments of her co-star, revealing that her collaboration with India was a fruitful one: “Being a veteran actress, I’ve been in positions where I've done a role that somebody else has done,” she began.

“I wanted India to be authentic in her own skin taking on this role. It had to come from her own truth,” she continued. “I echo what Adjoa says – to be able to give that to the next generation, to the next amazing actress coming up in this industry is such a privilege. So that was first and foremost what I wanted India to do.”

Corey Mylchreest, who will play a young version of King George III, added that playing a role in which the future is already known was an interesting situation, saying: “I think it’s a blessing because we see through incredible performances.

“It’s a bit like Romeo and Juliet – we’re told immediately that this isn’t going to end well, so it’s a lesson in staying present in the beauty of every moment,” he continued. "As actors it was brilliant because you just get to give everything in that moment because you know where it’s heading."

Bridgerton seasons 1-2 are streaming now on Netflix. Season 3 is in production. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is due to premiere on 4 May.
