  • Angelina Camacho and Joshua Towell met at their university's Christmas show nearly a year ago and recently got engaged

  • Moments before Towell was going to ask for Camacho's hand in marriage, she quickly removed his glasses and tossed them to the side

  • The comical moment, now viral on TikTok, served as a look into their playful relationship

Angelina Camacho and Joshua Towell's engagement was both deeply emotional and unexpectedly comical.

Towell had been meticulously planning the perfect proposal for Camacho, ensuring every detail was just right. Setting up the big moment at the Western Town Center in Weston, Fla., he made sure the couple's close friends and family were on hand to celebrate.

“We had one of her best friends come along, and she was with us for most of the day," Towell tells PEOPLE, adding that his then-girlfriend already thought he was on to something.

As he prepared to get down on one knee, a string quartet began performing nearby, playing songs from the pair's favorite movie: Fantastic Mr. Fox. “As soon as she recognizes the songs, she immediately starts bawling,” Towell recalls. “It’s a really beautiful moment. I went back and watched the video the other day, and I was just in tears.”

Overwhelmed with emotion, Camacho remembers the special milestone too, saying, “I legit thought the string quartet were just kind of there, and I thought we’re just going to hang out there because it’s fancy.”

“It was the most uncontrollable reaction I’ve ever had in my entire life,” she continues. “I just started ugly crying.”

Her emotional reaction was actually the reason why she did what she did next: take Towell's sunglasses off his face and toss them aside. The moment, caught on camera, has since gone viral on TikTok,

"I looked up and all I saw was the most contorted reflection of myself in his sunglasses,” she explains. “I’m like, ‘I don’t need to feel ugly right now. I’m being proposed to.’ So, I grabbed them and tossed them."

The spontaneous act added a hilarious touch to the moment, as it was a move that Towell actually planned to make himself. “Originally, my plan was to throw the glasses in the water and never see them again,” he adds. “But, she stole my bit.” Camacho responds, “And, I actually spared his glasses.”

The couple met nearly a year ago at their university Christmas show, and say this comical moment reflects their usual relationship dynamic. “We’re always having fun together and laughing,” Camacho shares.

While they have bonded through that playfulness, Towell and Camacho say they both considered making their relationship more serious around the same time.

“I had been carrying around his engagement ring in my purse for a while now,” Camacho tells PEOPLE. In fact, when asked about their plans, they reveal they bought engagement rings for each other during the same month; however, Towell waited to propose until both of their families could celebrate together.

Since sharing their proposal video on TikTok, it has garnered both positive and negative reactions. While some viewers see the sunglasses toss as a red flag, many others appreciate the humor and love behind the moment. “A lot of the positive ones are like: ‘She’s such a queen. We love her,’ ” Camacho notes.

“Some were like ‘Oh, she just wanted to look into his eyes,’ ” Towell adds. “Of course, you wouldn’t want to see your own reflection when you’re being proposed to.”

Following the proposal, Towell and Camacho are excitedly preparing for their future together, with a wedding set for spring 2025. “This viral moment has made us even more excited to see where the journey might take us,” Camacho reveals. “So we’re very excited to share our lives and our relationship with people and give people more hope in their lives.”
