Bride demands cash from wedding guest because £150 gift isn’t 'expensive enough'

An Australian wedding guest was left “speechless” after a bride said her gift wasn’t expensive enough and demanded a cash payment to make up for it.

The stunned woman, who posted about the incident on an online wedding shaming group, explained that she and her husband had attended the nuptials with the Australian dollar equivalent of £110 cash, along with a £40 designer candle.

However, the bride called weeks later to say the two guests’ attendance had cost around £270, so they would need to pay £160 to cover the extra expense.

The woman wrote on the social media group: "I've just hung up the phone from a friend (ex-friend now!) whose wedding was a few weekends ago.

"She was ringing people thanking them for coming to her wedding. Sweet right? Wrong."

"She had a beautiful wedding, lots of guests, lots of wine and food. There were even fireworks when she and her new hubby left (via yacht) to go on their honeymoon.

The guest then described how the bride criticised her "miserly" gift.

“At first I thought she was being sarcastic and joking, but she was serious. She didn't consider the candle a real gift because 'it wasn't the big one that she wanted,' she added.

The woman ended her post by explaining that unlike the US and other countries, Australian wedding guests are generally not expected to cover the cost of their attendance with gifts.

One outraged member of the group responded: “Throw the whole friend away. You can't charge admissions for your wedding.”
