Chocoholics rejoice, science has confirmed that chocolate is actually good for you. And we’re not just talking the odd Wispa here and there. Nope it turns out that a little bit of the sweet stuff every day, yes every day, can have benefits to your health.

Research published in the British Journal of Nutrition has linked 100g of chocolate a day to reduced insulin resistance and improved liver enzymes.

And the good news doesn’t stop there choc fans, recent research published in the journal Appetite found that regular chocolate intake is also associated with better cognitive brain function, including a stronger memory and reasoning skills.

So eating 100g of chocolate a day could lead to a healthier and smarter you.

What a time to be alive!

But before you crack open the Roses, there could well be a slight downside in that scientists are now hoping to take all the fun out of chocolate by turning it into a cocoa pill. Because don’t all good-for you things come in pill form?

Allow us to explain. Last year research published in Heart revealed that dark chocolate could potentially lower instances of cardiovascular disease and strokes. The world rejoiced in the news that they could gorge on the dark stuff guilt-free, well maybe not gorge, but you know what we mean.

But not happy to revel in this joyful news, some smart science bod decided to come up with the genius plan to bypass chocolate altogether and instead create a pill which will provide all the good aspects of choc ie cocoa without the bad bits ie fat and sugar.

Because it turns out that the negative aspects of all the other stuff that goes into making chocolate can actually outweigh any potential positive effects on your heart health. Dammit! Hence the choco-pill.

Although it’s still in the planning phase, scientists at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston are calling for volunteers to take part in a controlled study to test out the benefits of the cocoa supplement.

Researchers are hoping to find out if the cocoa pills can have the same health benefits dark chocolate might have, with none of the negatives.

There’s just one teensy problem. Even if it turns out the pills are equally, if not better for your health, have the science bods thought about the joy we get from actually eating chocolate? Part of the reason that we love it so, is because chocolate triggers a series of reactions in the brain that gives us all the feels.

So while we appreciate its good news that a pill might soon exist to help us reap the benefits of cocoa, we think we might take our chances on the Bourneville. Thanks anyway though science.
