Boy Smells has just released the year's most surprising celebrity beauty launch
Celebrity beauty launches aren’t exactly unusual in today’s hype-fuelled industry, but this week brings a collaboration we weren’t expecting. Fine fragrance house Boy Smells has joined forces with the inimitable Grace Jones to release a candle celebrating boundaryless beauty.
Subverting the beauty standard may be a common MO for modern pop stars, but few have challenged the gender norm as defiantly or dramatically as Jones.
Paying homage to the queer icon’s outré androgyny, the Grace candle is neither traditionally feminine nor masculine, yet it also lies refreshingly outside the usual unisex stable: there is nothing bland about this complex scent. Her Jamaican hometown serves as inspiration, with breezy florals floating over salty, aquatic notes that conjure the mineral freshness of the coast after a tropical storm.
“As an artist who has often defied the roles of gender, collaborating with Boy Smells has been truly amazing,” says Jones. “I’ve always believed you are born the way you are born and should make no apologies for it. I have always embraced both my feminine and masculine sides and this scent is an homage to that idea. The scent also strongly nods towards my passion for the natural beauty of Jamaica.”
