The cultural juggernaut that is Big Brother UK aired its first episode 20 years ago this week as 10 housemates walked into a house in Bow, London on 14 July before the show began airing days later on 18 July.

Thanks largely in part to the devious antics of ‘Nasty’ Nick Bateman and a dining table showdown, the programme enthralled viewers and went on to establish itself in TV history.

Based on the concept created by John de Mol for Dutch television, the original “social experiment” took on a life of its own after a few years as the show and its housemates made national - and sometimes international - news, for better or worse.

The friendships, fallouts and fights over food budgets became unmissable television as Big Brother made its mark on reality TV with massive amounts of influence.

It spawned 19 civilian series and 22 celebrity versions before coming to a halt two years ago, although there is still hope among fans that it could be resurrected.
