Bez fell over so hard his helmet 'flew off' during Dancing on Ice rehearsals

Happy Mondays star Bez fell onto the ice so hard that his helmet "flew off" during Dancing on Ice rehearsals.

The show's co-host Phillip Schofield revealed the percussionist's scary fall as an example of how dangerous the celebrity ice-skating competition can be.

"You have a rink that is full of essentially blades and we know how dangerous they can be and how deeply they can cut and how sharp they are. I've just watched a video of Bez on his second day fall over backwards so hard that his helmet flew off," he said, reports The Sun. "Dancing on Ice is really dangerous. They really all risk everything for it. We've seen in the past that people do get hurt and, of course, you want to avoid that at all costs. I think we will be wrapping Bez up in bubble wrap that's for sure."

Bez, real name Mark Berry, has been partnered with professional skater Angela Egan. They will be competing against former Strictly Come Dancing professional Brendan Cole, Coronation Street actress Sally Dynevor, Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt, and former S Club 7 singer Rachel Stevens, among others.

When he was announced as a contestant, Bez told Phillip and his Dancing on Ice co-host Holly Willoughby on This Morning, "How I got picked I don't know, because I was absolutely awful at the audition."

This year's series will be judged once again by Jayne Torvill, Christopher Dean, and Ashley Banjo, as well as Strictly's Oti Mabuse, who replaces John Barrowman.

Dancing on Ice launches on 16 January.
