From wasabi to fried chicken, Oreo have always pushed the boundaries of flavour combinations. With new variations popping up every few months and offerings ranging from the outrageous to the OMG (in a good way), we’re wondering when will it end?

With that in mind, we’ve rounded up the most interesting and unusual Oreo releases and limited-edition flavours from around the world – from the delicious to the disgusting.

The Most Oreo

If you’ve ever thought your Oreos don’t quite have enough Oreo in them, your dreams came true in early 2023. Oreo’s limited edition, The Most Oreo Oreo, featured cookies that were quite literally full of themselves. The creation consisted of a traditional Oreo cookie stuffed with an Oreo cookies and cream filling and went down a storm with fans.

Kentucky Fried Oreos

Also in 2023, KFC South Africa teamed up with Oreo to create Kentucky Fried Oreos: battered Oreo cookies dunked in the deep fryer for a crisp exterior and a gooey centre. The limited-edition dish, which came with soft-serve ice cream, caused a major talking point online, but was only available at KFC in Lynnwood, Pretoria.

Pumpkin Spice Cookies

Jumping on the trend for pumpkin spices in autumn, Oreo launched this seasonal treat across the US in late 2022. Available when the leaves are turning, it consists of two golden wafers filled with a rich pumpkin spice-flavoured creme, and is perhaps one of their most dunkable creations yet.

Oreo x Ritz

Brand collaborations are responsible for some of the best (and sometimes weirdest) flavour combinations out there. This is one of the best. Launched in the US during the summer of 2022, this cookie was a combination of two icons: a Ritz cracker with peanut butter stacked next to an Oreo with its traditional creme.

Brookie-O Brownie

The classic Oreo is perfect, but this seasonal flavour, first released in the US for Christmas 2020, hits the right spot. What could be more indulgent than chocolate Oreo cookies filled with a triple-layered combo of brownie, cookie dough, and original flavoured creme?

Wasabi

In 2018, Oreo released a product that many believed to be fake. But, as it turns out, it wasn’t. For a period of time, people were able to purchase Wasabi Oreos in China. One of their boldest flavours to date, it had a spicy wasabi creme paired with the signature chocolate cookie.

Cinnamon Bun

Oreo/Instagram

Two golden cinnamon cookies surrounding a frosting-style creme, this warming, sweet flavour was well-loved but sadly short-lived. The flavour, inspired by one of America’s favourite pastries, was originally released in 2016.

S'mores

Oreo/Instagram

The joys of camping and roasting s'mores over a fire – but without a tent or flame in sight. That's what this limited edition brought when it originally debuted in the US in 2015. The cookie consisted of two Graham cracker cookies filled with layers of chocolate and marshmallow creme.

Cookie Pop Popcorn

Oreo/Instagram

Crunchy kernels of popcorn coated in Oreo pieces can be found in the US only, and they're the perfect sweet and savoury snack, just like the movie-accompanying classic they're based on.

Alfajores

Alfajores are sandwich cookies popular in Latin America, consisting of two round, buttery cookie wafers filled with a sweet dulce de leche filling and either dusted with powdered sugar or dipped in chocolate. Oreo's take was only sold in Argentina and Uruguay, and consisted of two layers of creme sandwiched by three chocolate cookies and coated in chocolate.

Cakesters

Oreos transformed into a cake? Yes please! This soft-baked twist on the classic treat was first launched in 2007, but disappeared in 2012, much to fans' dismay. The Cakesters made a triumphant return in late 2022, though, along with the brand-new Nutter Butter Cakesters.

Gluten Free

Oreo have made it their mission to reach a variety of customers, which is why the classic cookies are both vegan and kosher. They've also released a gluten-free version of the beloved classic.

Watermelon

For this limited edition, Oreo filled their signature gold cookie with a dual-tone creme showcasing the signature watermelon colours of pink and green. The cookies debuted in 2013 but, unfortunately, they seemed to lack the freshness we associate with watermelon. Instead, they were quickly deemed to be a bit too artificial.

Berry Burst Ice Cream

Released in 2011, this berry flavour was like a chocolate-covered strawberry in cookie form. It's not always available, but it's definitely a flavour combination that Oreo seems to love, releasing similar varieties every couple of years or so.

Lemon

This may not be the most outrageous flavour ever made, but it was one of the most popular. The lemon-laced treat was one of the limited-edition cookies that Oreo released in 2012. The sweet vanilla notes of the golden biscuit combined with a tangy lemon cream made for a delicious mix. Its success guaranteed a return the following year.

Football

While Oreo haven’t been shy regarding flavours, they've not experimented much with shapes, preferring to stick to the signature round cookie we all know and love. In 2010, however, they released a limited-edition Football Oreo cookie, an American football-shaped version of the classic chocolate cookie.

Birthday Cake

Released in 2012 to celebrate the brand’s 100th year, the birthday cake has been one of the most successful flavours. The cookie features a sweet birthday cake-flavoured creme and colourful sprinkles sandwiched by the usual chocolate cookies. What started as a limited edition became a permanent flavour due to its popularity.

Gingerbread

Made of two golden Oreo cookies and a seasonal gingerbread-flavoured creme filling, this limited edition was released in time for 2012’s Christmas season and that’s exactly what they tasted like – Christmas.

Banana Split

This limited edition hit the shelves in 2013, and it was made with one golden and one chocolate Oreo filled with a double dose of strawberry and banana flavoured crème. It was only missing a cherry on top.

Root Beer Float

In 2014, Oreo revealed a new variety with a nostalgic note – the Root Beer Float. They paired two vanilla golden cookies with a root beer and vanilla creme filling.

Most Stuf

Oreo’s signature vanilla creme has a cult following of its own, which Oreo decided to take advantage of by releasing their incredibly successful Most Stuf, the Oreo with the most amount of creme to date. Introduced in 2019, the cookie has about four times as much creme as the standard cookie.

Caramel Coconut

Debuting for the first time in 2020, the Caramel Coconut Oreo combined the chocolate cookie with a caramel and coconut creme: a classic pairing.

Cotton Candy

Sometimes developers come up with genius new pairings. Other times... not so much. In 2015, Oreo released a chocolate cookie filled with a pale pink and blue candyfloss creme. We'll let you decide which category these fall into.

Key Lime Pie

In 2015 Oreo released Key Lime Pie just in time for summer all over the US. The limited edition featured a unique Graham cookie and a Key lime pie-flavoured creme, in homage to the classic Florida Keys dessert.

Candy Corn

Many thought this was a fake flavour, but Oreo really did develop a limited-edition Candy Corn cookie in 2012, launched in the US. The usual golden vanilla cookie was filled with the signature orange and yellow colours of candy corn. Something must have gone right, as they've been brought back several times since.

Red Velvet

These red chocolate and cream cheese cookies were taken out of circulation in 2020, but they will live forever in our hearts as one of the best seasonal flavours. An ode to the classic American velvet cake that was invented in 1911, this flavour was a perfect choice for the Oreo empire.

Firework

Oreo/Instagram

Popping candy is what fireworks taste of, or that's what Oreo decided when they launched their limited-edition Firework Oreos in 2017, just in time for the Fourth of July celebrations.

Mocha Caramel Latte

Oreo/Instagram

Aimed at iced coffee lovers, this cookie flavour was launched in April 2022 in the US. The flavour was inspired by a coffeehouse favourite, combining a rich layer of mocha latte and a caramel layer with the traditional chocolate cookie.

Strawberry Shortcake

Oreo/Instagram

Oreo/Instagram

Strawberry shortcake was a successful limited-edition flavour in the US that's made the rounds a couple of times since first introduced. Combining a strawberry creme filling and a buttery golden cookie, the pairing was reminiscent of the classic dessert.

Marshmallow Crispy

Oreo/Instagram

Two childhood favourites were combined in 2014 to create this gem. The limited-edition Marshmallow Crispy was an ode to classic Rice Krispy treats, consisting of a marshmallow-flavoured creme filling with crispy cereal bits mixed in and sandwiched between two signature golden cookies.

Hot Chicken Wing

Some thought Wasabi was as far as Oreo would take it, but the company kept it bold by announcing they would also be launching another unique variety: Hot Chicken Wings. The creme and chocolate biscuit combo was released in China but we imagine the flavour wasn’t that far away from having some chicken crisps and Oreo cookies both at the same time.

Swedish Fish

Oreo has found success in combining its own brand with other cult favourites, which is how this collaboration with Swedish Fish came to be. In 2016, Oreo decided to surprise Americans by releasing their Swedish Fish Oreos with a slightly radioactive pink-coloured, cherry-flavoured creme in between two chocolate cookies.
