The best all-season duvets that will keep you cosy all year round, according to our testing panel
If you spend the summer (aka the two-week heatwave we get around July each year) tossing, turning and waking up in a sweat, but then start feeling the chill come the arrival of autumn nights, then investing in the best all season duvet could be the money-saving, year round solution you've been looking for.
Which means you're in luck. Because the experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute have been busy testing these three-in-one designs to help you find the best for your bedroom, whatever the weather.
Already sold? These are our experts' top picks to shop now, but keep scrolling for our full verdicts and everything you need to know about these versatile designs.
Prefer more choice? We've also found the best duvets overall, as well as the best summer duvets and best winter duvets if you typically run more hot or cold.
What is an all-season duvet?
There are a few different types of all-season duvet, but our favourite style here at the Good Housekeeping Institute is the three-in-one design. These are made up of two layers – one lighter tog duvet and one heavier tog – that can be used separately or fastened together, offering the best of both worlds.
The tog count refers to a duvet's thermal rating – the higher the tog, the warmer it is. A 3-in-1 duvet will usually combine a lighter (approx. 4.5 tog) summer duvet with a heavier option (around 10.5 togs or above). Adding them together means you get maximum warmth for winter, and you can also enjoy flexibility throughout the rest of the year – something that’s much needed with unpredictable UK weather. This makes them a top pick for value for money, too.
If you’re tight on storage space, or just want one duvet, some brands also sell 7 - 10.5 tog quilts that should see you through most weather – head to our round-up of the best duvets if that's what you're after, as there are several in our list.
Which tog duvet do I need for each season?
For those warmer summer months, we recommend anything that’s around 4.5 togs or below.
If you're after something super cosy for winter, anything around 13.5 togs should keep you nice and warm. If your room is a little on the colder side, you could even go all the way up to a 15 tog, or pair with one of our experts' best electric blankets or a best weighted blanket, which are designed to feel like ‘a warm hug’.
For the rest of the year, when it’s not too hot or too cold, anything between seven to 10.5 togs should be just right.
The beauty of an all-seasons duvet is you can usually get all that in one purchase.
How to care for your all-seasons duvet
Before you pack away the summer or winter layer of your all-seasons duvet, it’s important to wash it beforehand, referring to our expert's advice on how to wash bedding. This keeps it fresh and prevents any dust mites from gathering.
Always check the manufacturer's instructions for guidance, but many duvets can be washed at home in the machine. Some washing machines even come with a duvet programme. But, if you're struggling to fit it in the drum and it doesn't have space to move around in the wash, we suggest taking it to a specialist dry cleaner instead.
How we test duvets
We send each duvet to four different at-home testers so they can sleep with it for a few weeks before giving detailed feedback on how it performed. We want to know if it’s comfortable, high quality and breathable.
We also test them extensively in-house at the GHI, with every duvet meticulously inspected for quality. We measure them and check this against the brand’s claims. They then go through the brands’ recommended wash and dry cycles, before being inspected again for any changes to the size, appearance and distribution of filling.

Soft As Down Microfibre All Seasons 4.5 + 9 Tog Duvet
Score: 96/100
Our winner has a luxury feel minus the hefty price tag – and with a near-perfect score, it’s certainly an investment worth making. Switch between the light 4.5 tog in summer, a combined 13.5 togs in winter, and the 9 tog for those in-between nights.
One tester described the snap studs that join the layers as “game-changing”, praising how quick it was to secure them, which is reassuring if you don't want to add more steps into your making-the-bed routine.
Even after multiple washes, this duvet kept its shape and the microfibre filling was evenly distributed. It also comes with a storage bag that “screams high quality,” according to one of our testers. In short, this is a quality year-round buy at a reasonable price.
4-Seasons Duvet - 7 + 3.5 tog
Score: 94/100
Emma is no newbie in the world of bedding (it makes one of our best mattresses), so it's no surprise this 4-Seasons duvet performed well in our tests. Though slightly lighter than our winner (it combines a 3.5 and 7 tog duvet), it pleased our panel of testers with its quiet comfort, secure poppers, high quality design and perfect fit within their covers.
You’ve got 14 nights to try it out, with a full refund if you're not happy. But considering how well it performed with our testers, we think it will probably make it past the two-week mark, whatever the temperature.
Hybrid® Duvet - 7 + 3.5 tog
Score: 93/100
This is another top-rated duvet with 3.5 and 7 tog layers to choose from. Both are made with Simba’s unique cooling Stratos technology, which helps to regulate body temperature. When fully combined (with 10.5 togs of warmth), it was very snuggly, but the poppers – while easy to use – weren’t the most secure, resulting in some rustling.
It maintained its premium finish after washing and drying though – so not to worry if you spill your morning coffee. Simba is also one of our top picks for sustainability creds – the filling is made with recycled bottles, and the brand is a certified B Corp.
Hungarian Goose Down Duvet Double All Seasons -9 + 4.5 Tog
Score: 90/100
Filled with Hungarian goose down, this luxurious duvet is a breathable and lightweight option that retains heat and fluffiness well. In fact, one tester said it “feels like a cloud,” which is probably all you need to know.
However, we'll go on...You get a 9 tog duvet and 4.5 tog duvet, which a few testers found notably warm and weighty when combined – but with the different options, you should be able to find what works for you within a few nights. It even washed fairly well (something that isn’t a given for down).
The brand claims that the filling is ethically sourced and it has been accredited for responsible down standards. It also comes with a 10-year guarantee, so while it's pricey, you are getting a duvet that lasts a decade.
The Cavendish Four Seasons Duvet - 8 + 4.5 tog
Score: 89/100
Brook + Wilde has been developing wellbeing-enhancing sleep products for over 25 years, which shows in the premium craftsmanship of its products. And the higher price tag on this duvet does reflect the premium quality, according to our panel.
Both the 4.5 tog and 8 tog layers are filled with white down and feathers, encased in 100% cotton, making it a lightweight yet warm duvet.
Testers thought it made the bed look “very inviting”, and it lived up to their comfy expectations when they were tucked in. The only con (other than the price)? It will definitely make it harder to get out of bed in the morning.

Cosy Nights 10.5 + 4.5 Tog Duvet
Score: 89/100
If you feel a chill in the winter, then this microfibre duvet offers a cosy 15 togs when combined (one layer is 4.5 and the other is 10.5 tog). This doesn’t mean it’s too heavy though – our testers found it breathable and lightweight, and therefore easy to move around (shout out to all you wrigglers out there), without compromising on warmth.
Where this duvet shone the most, though, was in the wash test. There was no shrinkage at all, and the filling remained evenly distributed. The only downside was the packaging it came in, as it cannot be reused to store any spare parts. However, it's a snip at less than £35 for three duvets.
We also tested Slumberdown’s All Seasons 15 Tog Duvet, which similarly scored 89/100 and costs just £31.
Feather and Down 10.5 Tog Duvet
Score: 88/100
This isn’t a two-part duvet, but we wanted to include this 10.5 tog option as it's a good alternative to help you bridge the gap between seasons. This down duvet stands out because of EarthKind's sustainability efforts, which includes taking pre-loved bedding that was destined for landfill and recycling and repurposing it into new products.
The result? Luxurious and good-as-new duvets and pillows. This duvet performed well on test too; testers said the cosy design kept them warm throughout the night. When put to test in the wash, there was some shrinkage, so you may want to dry clean it, but making the bed was effortless.
This was a little too lightweight for some during colder weather, but we also tested the 13.5 tog version (which scored 88/100) and the brand's three-in-one design (this scored 83/100 as it bunched up a little when both parts were combined).
Soft-Touch Washable 3-in-1, 4.5 + 9 Tog Duvet
Score: 87/100
This three-in-one duvet (which includes 4.5 tog and 9 tog layers) has has a recycled polyester filling and uses ultrasonic technology to seal the seams instead of thread. This creates a strong, high-quality finish that ensures no loose threads.
Testers were happy with the initial quality of the duvet and found it soft and comfortable. However, some filling began to come out of the casting after washing, so we suggest using a gentler cycle than the 60 degrees recommended. But it was genuinely cosy, and a good pick if you want something feather-free.
Made For You Two Double Duvet - 4.5 + 10.5 Tog
Score: 83/100
The idea that opposites attract is all well and good, but if you and your partner have different body temperatures at night, you’ll know it can be a struggle when it comes to good sleep.
But this half and half duvet from Slumberdown – slightly different to the other all-season options on our list – may be the solution; one half is a cool 4.5 tog and the other side is a warmer 10.5 tog. So, whoever runs hot can take the lighter side, while their partner stays cosy.
One tester who described themselves as “a lady of a certain age” said she opted for the lighter tog and found it cosy and comfortable. Many noted its quality too, and despite the different filling densities, it fitted well inside bed covers. It fared well in our wash tests too, although there was some shrinkage.
The verdict on the best all-season duvets
If you're looking for a great night's sleep without having to spend big, we recommend our high-scoring winner, Soft & Soak's Soft As Down Microfibre All Seasons 13.5 Tog Duvet.
For those who really feel the chill in winter, Slumberdown's Cosy Nights 15 Tog Duvet lives up to its name, offering a cosy 15 togs, while still remaining breathable and lightweight (all for less than £40).
Or if you’re a hot sleeper, but still want some extra comfort, then the Simba Hybrid Duvet is a smart buy.
Finally, if you want put those duvet wars to rest once and for all, we recommend Slumberdown's Made-for-Two design, which has a lightweight 4.5 tog side and a cosy 10.5 tog side to keep everyone happy.
