Eczema is a skin condition that results in dry and flaky red patches of skin and can even cause blisters and sores. It’s not exactly clear what causes it, but some researchers believe a combination of genes and a trigger are involved.

It can occur anywhere on the body and can be triggered at certain times of the year.

According to Allergy UK, it has been estimated that up to 15 million people in the UK could be living with the condition and around 50-70% of children with eczema become sensitised to one or more allergens, typically food allergens such as egg and nut and airborne allergens such as house dust mites.

With autumn just around the corner, it means the mercury will start to drop and colder days and nights will be upon us. And for eczema sufferers, this could mean a flare-up.

During the winter, eczema mainly stems from a dehydration of skin cells, and a compromised skin barrier from lack of skin lipids. Eczema can also be triggered by stress, irritants such as water, cigarette smoke, fragrances, certain fabrics such as wool and polyester, an infection, allergens and even hormones.

But with so many creams, lotions and moisturisers available to buy, it can be difficult to sift through the ingredients list to check if they are suitable to treat eczema.
