The Best Looks From Dries Van Noten’s Final Show
Beloved Belgian designer Dries Van Noten announced his upcoming retirement in March, which sent shockwaves through the fashion industry. Yesterday evening, his final runway during the menswear shows at Paris Fashion Week served as an ode to his many years of artistic influence. Models at the event included new faces and some that have been walking for his eponymous label since the early days, which Van Noten shared was their way of “marking the passage of time.”
The looks for the evening were composed of layers, playing with opacity and transparency to create wearable landscapes. Pieces were a mix of monochromes in grays and blacks, set off with pops of color in rich purples, peach, and lime, accentuated by gold embroidery and surprising metallics. In a press release, the brand shared their attention to detail through craft. Particularly, the use of special stitch techniques to create a degradé of fine lines and Suminagashi, a Japanese marbling technique that produced some of the line’s prints that resemble floral or firework patterns.
For the big event, Van Noten released a statement to say goodbye:
“This is my 129th show; like the previous ones, it looks ahead. Tonight is many things, but it is not a grand finale. I think about how Marcelo Mastroianni once spoke of a paradoxical ‘Nostalgia del futuro,’ beyond the lost paradises imagined by Proust, and how we continue to pursue our dreams knowing that, at some point, we can look back on them with love. I love my job, I love doing fashion shows, and sharing fashion with people. Creating is about leaving something that lives on. My sense of this moment is how it is not only mine, but ours, always.”
