Take an imaginary stroll, for a moment, along the Ligurian coast in Italy, from Santa Margherita to San Fruttuoso, via the famous harbour of Portofino.

‘The road undulates between sparkling sea, forest trails, picturesque bays and warm-toned façades,’ says Fabian Freytag, describing the inspiration behind the design of his Berlin apartment. ‘I wanted to box up these memories,’ he explains, ‘to breathe this atmosphere into my home.’

Located in the Mitte district, the interior designer’s flat occupies part of a former horse-hay storehouse that dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, its brick exterior still bearing the original inscription ‘Forage-Handlung’ (fodder warehouse). It’s a place Fabian knows well, as the first two levels have housed his eponymous studio and reception spaces since 2018.

With his sense of staging and signature chromatic playfulness, Fabian has created a sunshine-filled den that is a true reflection of his personality and style. Here, colour has a functional role as well as an aesthetic one, allowing each space to be clearly defined and emphasising contrasts.

The muted tones he has chosen complement the exposed-concrete structure, while pastels exude warmth. It’s a perfectly orchestrated fantasy, which, mixed with geometric patterns, pieces from the 1960s and 70s and custom furniture made in his own studio, means that Fabian enjoys the care-free holiday vibes all year round. fabianfreytag.com
