Ben Shephard pauses This Morning segment to make announcement

Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley were all set to discuss the latest headlines when Ben shared the update that tennis star Andy Murray had withdrawn from Wimbledon.

The Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis was also on hand to dish out his financial wisdom, but the conversation took a pause as Ben delivered the unexpected sports news.

Cat kicked off the segment by saying: "Tom and Ashley are here now to talk about some more news stories."

But Ben interjected: "Yeah, a bit of breaking news while we have been on air," as reported by the Express.

He continued with the unfortunate announcement: "Very sadly, Andy Murray has announced he will not be competing in the Men's Singles at this year's Wimbledon."

Explaining further, Ben said: "He was battling really hard to come back from injury. He is going to play in the doubles, his team said, 'Despite working incredibly hard on his recovery since his operation just over a week ago, Andy has taken the very difficult decision not to play this year's singles, and as you can imagine."

The statement concluded: "He is very disappointed but has confirmed he will be playing the doubles for the last time'."

Andy Murray, aged 37, had recently undergone surgery on Saturday, June 22 to remove a spinal cyst and had been seen hitting the courts again just days after.

Andy had a practice set with Kyle Edmund on Monday, after which he said he would discuss his next move with his team and family.

However, after waking up today, the former world No. 1 has decided not to play against Tomas Machac on Centre Court.

The Scotsman secured a 6-3 2-0 victory over Edmund on Monday, wrapping up his hour-and-a-half-long training session with coach Jonny O'Mara.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
