Want to visit the Greek islands but apprehensive about all the crowds?

Santorini and Mykonos put some tourists off because they can be overcrowded. The holiday hotspots attract around 3.4 million and two million holidaymakers a year respectively.

And as a result, it can be tricky to walk around streets or find a spot to watch the sunset. Thankfully though, there are ways to experience Greece without getting jostled by crowds.

You should consider heading to one of the less popular Greek islands – such as Sifnos. The destination has been branded the "most underrated" spot in the Cyclades.

The laid back island welcomes around 126,000 people annually and is just as beautiful as its neighbours. Sifnos offers numerous picturesque beaches with clear blue waters, such as Platis Gialos, Vathi, and Kamares.

To immerse yourself in nature even more, you can hike along an abundance of well-marked trails that boast beautiful views of the traditional white buildings, terraced hills and olive groves.

Alternatively, explore Sifnos' rich history with several significant archaeological sites – including ancient towers and the Agios Andreas Acropolis.

If you're a foodie, you'll likely be in heaven too. Sifnos is famous for its culinary tradition, offering delicious local dishes like chickpea soup and mastelo (lamb stew).

People have been taking to social media to rave about just how incredible the Greek Island is. And one tourist who recently shared her experience is a vlogger called Totally Avalon.

In a short TikTok clip, she raved about the destination's "amazing" food, "incredibly blue" water and "unforgettable" landscape. She told viewers she "can't wait to go back" – and it seems many are interested in visiting too.

One commenter gushed: "Stunning". Another said: "This was our favourite island". And another added: "Looks incredible".

Tempted to book a trip yourself? To get to Sifnos, you should fly into Athens. When travelling from Scottish airports like Edinburgh, you can book tickets from around £45 but will need to make a top on the way.

After landing, take a taxi, bus or train to Piraeus and catch a ferry to Piraeus. While the high-speed boat trip takes just two to three hours, traditional ferries tend to take five to six hours.
