January and the start of a new year can only mean one thing to the delight of Silent Witness fans, as the series returns. This time the 28th series has an overarching theme of love and there are new cast members.

First airing in 1996 the show is a favourite for many and follows a team of forensic pathology experts and their investigations into various crimes. Currently, all 27 previous series of Silent Witness are available on BBC iPlayer, if you fancy binging before watching the 27th series.

When does Silent Witness series 28 begin and how many episodes?

Silent Witness begins on Monday, January 6 at 9pm on BBC One. There are ten episodes in the series, made up of five two part stories, each an hour long.

The second episode will air on Tuesday, January 7 at 9pm on BBC One. Each week’s new story will premiere in full on BBC iPlayer from 6am each Monday, ahead of airing on BBC One on Monday and Tuesdays at 9pm for five weeks.

What is the plot of Silent Witness series 28?

The new series opens with a disturbing mystery, when the death of an elderly woman found in a cave has the team asking what drives a person to murder someone so vulnerable. Viewers also get an introduction to two dynamic new team members - the new Head of The Lyell Centre, Harriet Maven played by Maggie Steed, and crime analyst Kit Brooks played by Francesca Mills.
