Janey Godley has passed away at the age of 63, just one month after she told fans she would be receiving palliative care. The star, who received an honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow while in her hospice bed, died in “surrounded by her loved ones”, her management has confirmed.

The comedian announced she would be going into a hospice in a video shared on social media in September, almost three years on from Janey publicly announcing that she had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

She shared her ovarian cancer diagnosis in November 2021, and a year later, she took to Twitter (X) to share the news that she had been given the all-clear, with "no evidence of disease". However, a later scan showed signs of cancer in her abdomen. Despite this blow though, Janey was determined to press on with her tour scheduled for February and March 2023.

In an interview with Lorraine Kelly, the star spoke about a conversation Jimmy Carr, who encouraged her not to give up on touring. She said: "I decided to cancel the tour, and my mate Jimmy Carr said, 'Is your mouth not working? '. I went, 'Yeah, my mouth works' and he said, 'Well get back on tour'." In September this year, Janey cancelled her tour while giving an update on her incurable cancer.

In September, Janey told fans on social media that she was receiving end-of-life treatment. Speaking in a moving video, the writer from Glasgow said: "The chemo ran out of options, and I couldn’t take anymore of it. The cancer has spread, so it looks like this will be getting to near the end of it, and it’s really difficult to speak about this and say it to people."

Janey added: "It is devastating news, to know that I’m facing end of life but we all come to an end some time. I don’t know how long I’ve got left before anybody asks, I’m not a tick tock, I just want you all to know that I appreciate all the love you’ve gave me. Cancer affects one in two people and it’s affected me."

Following her health update, Janey's daughter shared a touching message to her own fans and explained she would be respecting her mother's dying wishes. Ashley Storrie, also a comedian and daughter to Janey and her husband Sean Storrie, told followers that she "wouldn't be sitting a vigil" at her mum's bedside, stating it isn't what her mum wanted.
