BBC Call The Midwife star lets slip huge Christmas spoiler after show first

A Call The Midwife star has let slip a huge spoiler about the two Christmas specials.

Laura Main plays Nurse Shelagh Turner in the BBC One hit drama series, which returns to our screens this festive season. Call The Midwife will air its first-ever double Christmas special - with one episode on Christmas Day and the second on Boxing Day.

The Christmas specials will air over two nights this festive season. The usual 90-minute special will be replaced with two 60-minute specials over two days, complete with a big Christmas cliffhanger.

Set in 1969, a funfair arrives in Poplar, but things aren't all welcome - as influenza and Hong Kong flu also hit the town. There is a carol concert but also the unwelcome news of an escaped prisoner arriving in town, with many convinced he is in the local area after a spate of break-ins across the town. Trixie heads to Nonnatus House to see her brother Geoffrey whilst Miss Higgins is joined by her grandson Harry for the festive season. Violet holds a mince pie competition whilst the Buckers prepare for Reggie's homecoming.

Laura appeared on BBC Breakfast this morning, revealing a little spoiler about the Christmas specials. Speaking to hosts Sally Nugent and Jon Kay, she said: "Yes! I probably ought not to say anything, really! It does involve a much-loved member of the community. So yes, you will want to be tuning in again on Boxing Day.

"That image of us singing Christmas carols - I think that comes to what - I'm giving away too many secrets. But you get all the rousing finishes and all the Christmas magic in each episode. So you'll be fuelled up by then."

The Christmas specials will be followed by a new and 15th series, with the eight episodes launching in early 2025.

Heidi Thomas OBE, creator and writer, said of the Christmas special: "Who doesn’t love finding an extra, unexpected present underneath the Christmas tree? When I was asked to write a two-part Christmas special for 2024, I couldn’t resist!"

Dame Pippa Harris, executive producer, added, "For the first time, viewers can luxuriate in a two-part festive treat this Christmas. Heidi has created a spellbinding special that I know will delight our loyal fans."
