A Bay Area Wine Estate Owned by the Founder of Guitar Hero Is Headed to Auction

Tech entrepreneur Jack McCauley, the founder of Guitar Hero (and Oculus VR), knows a thing or two about hitting the right notes. Now, his California vineyard estate is headed for auction.

The wine-centric spread, about 30 miles northeast of Silicon Valley, is going under the hammer in a no-reserve digital auction that will be held from November 30 to December 14. Concierge Auctions expects that starting bids for the 14-acre estate, which was once on the market to the tune of $8.9 million, will range from $2.8 million to $5.5 million.

The Bay Area home of Guitar Hero and Oculus VR founder Jack McCauley is headed to auction.

The sun-drenched main house is set behind gates and measures 6,535 square feet, with seven bedrooms and six bathrooms. It was designed by San Francisco-based architect Mark Schatz, who is best known for his work for the Four Seasons hotel chain.

The home is kitted out with fancy finishes and flourishes that include inlaid marble, soaring ceilings, custom millwork, French doors, and fireplaces galore. The kitchen sports top-of-the-line appliances from Thermador and Wolf, plus custom cabinets, a large island, a breakfast nook, and, of course, a large wine fridge. In terms of entertainment, there’s a massive game room guests can enjoy in addition to a state-of-the-art movie theater.

When it’s time to retreat, think of the primary suite as your own private sanctuary—and rightfully so. The home’s principal bedroom comes with its own cozy sitting room that’s complemented by a fireplace. Better yet, the massive ensuite bathroom is equipped with a generously sized platform soaking tub and not one but two vanities.

The sprawling backyard’s centerpiece is a stunning resort-style swimming pool decked out with waterfalls, grottos, a swim-up bar, and a pergola-shaded hot tub. Additional perks include a covered shuffleboard court, a private putting green where you can practice your short game, and an open-air kitchen pavilion for an aspiring chef.

The pièce de résistance, however, is that the swanky abode comes with an award-winning boutique winery that’s capable of producing approximately 1,000 cases of wine annually. Altogether, there are four acres of Cabernet Sauvignon grapevines and one acre dedicated to Sauvignon Blanc vines. A 3,500-square-foot tasting room completes the package.

Oenophiles, pour yourself a glass of your favorite vintage and get ready to place your bids!
