Battle of the Sexes trailer: Emma Stone and Steve Carell face off on the tennis court
Could Emma Stone be in line for a rare Oscar twofer? Just months after her Best Actress win for La La Land, Stone is already making a claim for another trip to the Academy Awards with Battle of the Sexes, the true story of the epic 1973 tennis match between former World No. 1 tennis champ Billie Jean King and chauvinistic former World No. 1 Bobby Riggs.
The film sees the horrendous self-promoter Riggs (played by Steve Carell) challenging King to a televised tennis event to prove that men are better than women on the court, all while King was coming to terms with her sexuality and secretly involved with her secretary (Andrea Riseborough).
From Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, the directors of Little Miss Sunshine, and produced by Danny Boyle, the film features an all-star supporting cast including Sarah Silverman, Alan Cumming, Elisabeth Shue and Bill Pullman.
The real Billie Jean King has already revealed that she is excited about the film, and gave Stone her complete approval when she heard of her casting.
"Shes a fantastic human being," she told Ginn and Topics. "Forget about on-screen, but in real life she's fantastic. I think she's very gifted. Danny Boyle said that he wanted Emma Stone to play [me]. I go, 'Emma Stone, she's an A-plus as an actor! Really?'
"And then he said Steve Carell for Bobby Riggs, and I said 'Oh my god, another A-plus actor!' Every actor's like an A-plus. You've got Alan Cumming, Sarah Silverman – they're all superstars, every one of them. I mean, holy camoly!"
Battle of the Sexes is released on October 20.
