A Baronial Scottish Castle Can Be Yours for $2.9 Million

At roughly $2.9 million, Kelly Castle in Scotland costs far less than some New York City apartments but, unlike any Manhattan home at any price, includes its own nine-hole golf course and an option to purchase an aristocratic title.

Located near Arbroath, the B-listed residence sits on a sprawling 33 acres and was originally built sometime during the 15th century. Its current owner, retired accountant Alun Grassick, bought the historic castle in 2001 as his second home and has made several renovations since. Altogether, the baronial abode comprises five bedrooms and five bathrooms, plus a self-contained guest apartment and a two-bedroom flat for the estate manager. Additionally, Grassick holds the title of Baron of Kelly in Angus and is willing to hand over the title for a separate negotiated price.

Since it was built in the 15th century, Kelly Castle in Scotland has undergone many renovations.

According to records, the land that Kelly Castle sits on was acquired sometime in the 13th century by Philip de Moubray, a Norman settler, from William the Lion, King of Scotland. The existing castle was originally built sometime in the 1500s, and in 1641, the property was sold to the Irvine family, who made numerous additions, including the courtyard and ancillary wings. The estate subsequently changed hands several times between notable families, including the Maule Earls of Panmure and the Ramsay Earls of Dalhousie, and the fortress-like structure was repaired and extended again in the 1860s by John Shiell.

“As castles come, Kelly Castle is certainly a special one,” David Law, head of Strutt & Parker Edinburgh, said in a press statement. “In immaculate condition, the present owners have worked tirelessly to create a practical family home within these turreted walls.”

The interior includes original decorative plasterwork.

Despite the numerous remodels over the years, the four-story tower house still retains many of its original features, including decorative plasterwork. Of course, there are more modern comforts too, like a basement bar, a billiards room, and a cinema. Outside, the grounds sport a formal walled garden and a croquet lawn. And if the surroundings weren’t scenic enough, the castle is situated on the banks of the Elliot Water, a small river that flows through the historic county of Angus.

“The prime country house and estates market in Scotland has always held strong appeal, particularly to overseas buyers who are drawn to our romantic landscapes, ancient buildings, and historic tales,” added Law. “With Kelly Castle close to airports at Dundee and Edinburgh, I expect strong levels of interest from overseas buyers looking for their own slice of Scotland.”
