Barbie film starring Margot Robbie to be co-written by indie favourite Greta Gerwig

Lady Bird writer-director Greta Gerwig and her long-time collaborator and husband Noah Baumbach have signed up to write the script of the forthcoming Barbie movie, starring Margot Robbie.

Gerwig is also reportedly in talks to direct the live-action movie.

The attachment of Gerwig and Baumbach has sparked the interest of indie film fans, as the duo are best known for their collaborations on small independent movies such as Mistress in America and Frances Ha.

Barbie has undergone many transformations since it was first announced, with Amy Schumer initially attached to star before Robbie took over in January.

Gerwig’s next film will be the hotly anticipated Little Women adaptation starring Emma Watson, Florence Pugh and Saoirse Ronan as the March sisters.

Baumbach, meanwhile, has a new divorce dramedy starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson coming out on Netflix.
