The Great British Bake Off is just days away, with fans being introduced to the budding new bakers who will be keen to impress the judges and get a golden handshake (or a post-Covid elbow bump) from Paul Hollywood.

To get us even more excited about the show's launch, Prue Leith has shared details about working with fellow judge Paul and how he deals with the contestants when the cameras aren't rolling. Viewers might be relieved to hear that his "steely" glare is all for show, and that he's a big softie with the bakers backstage.

While featuring on The Radio Times Podcast, Prue admitted she was "surprised at how knowledgeable [Paul] is, and how interesting he is, and also how extraordinarily kind he is" behind-the-scenes.

"You know, you see the sort of severe face on Bake Off, and the steely blue stare - you know, the steely blue eyes," Prue told presenters Jane Garvey and Rhianna Dhillon.

"And after, if a baker is upset, it will be Paul who, when the cameras are off, will go and put his arm around them and tell them that it’s not the end of the world – it's only cake, and tomorrow's another day, and they can do better.

"It's always him. He's a lot kinder, I think, than I am."

Prue and Paul will be returning with hosts Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas, as twelve bakers battle it out in the iconic white tent to win the coveted Bake Off cake-stand.

The Great British Bake Off will return to Channel 4 on Tuesday, September 21st, at 8pm.
