BAFTAs 2020: Guests asked to rewear or hire outfits in bid to create sustainable ceremony

The BAFTAS are one of the most fashion-forward nights of the awards calendar - and tonight’s red carpet is certain to be awash with stunning gowns and sharp tailoring.
However, this year’s guests will have to work a little harder for their style points, with attendees being asked to rewear or hire outfits in an effort to create a “carbon-neutral” ceremony.
They have been given a sustainable fashion guide created by the London College of Fashion to help them navigate the new environmentally-conscious dress code.
As well as wearing something already hanging in their wardrobe, they suggest guests opt for second-hand or hire an ensemble.

They recommended pre-owned outlets such as Vestiare Collective and Depop, or rental sites including Hurr Collective, By Rotation and My Wardrobe HQ.
Should guests insist on making a fresh purchase, they highlight Stella McCartney and Reformation as sustainable brands who use eco-friendly materials.
According to the guide, “this awards season BAFTA are doing more than ever before to consider sustainability across its awards ceremonies, including inviting guests to ‘dress sustainably’.
“To help navigate some of the issues around fashion and sustainability London College of Fashion, UAL are supporting BAFTA with more information on how you can dress sustainably.”

A spokesperson for BAFTA said: “Sustainability is very important to BAFTA, and we’re doing more than ever before.
“Where sustainable choices are unable to be made, BAFTA is offsetting, as well as giving guests the tools to offset their own travel and make sustainable fashion choices.”
The move is likely to have gone down well with confirmed royal attendee Kate Middleton, who regularly recycles her outfits for engagements.
Another well-dressed star who will be stepping out tonight, Laura Whitmore, has also praised the announcement.

Taking to Instagram, the Love Island presenter wrote: “This year @Bafta film awards are going carbon neutral.
“They’ve also asked for everyone to wear something they already own! Love this idea.”
She also shared carousel of images showing outfits she wore to BAFTA in previous years which she revealed were “all worn and loved again by other people”.
In addition to red carpet sustainability, the ceremony will also not be giving out goody bags and will serve up a vegan starter and dessert.
