Bad Sisters meets Broadchurch: Anne-Marie Duff’s new BBC revenge drama is giving us all the thrills
If you’re missing your fix of Apple TV+’s Bad Sisters, you’ll be pleased to hear that Anne-Marie Duff will soon be returning to ours screens in a new revenge thriller – and it really is giving us all the thrills. Reunion is the new BBC One drama bringing together the cast of yes, Bad Sisters, and the one and only Broadchurch. Could there be a better mash-up?
The four-part drama is a tale of revenge and redemption – and let’s just say, we’re in for quite an emotional ride. Daniel Brennan (Matthew Gurney) is the man at the centre of the action – deaf and recently released from prison, he finds himself isolated, even from his estranged daughter Carly (Lara Peake). He also wants redemption.
Then, there’s Anne-Marie Duff who plays Christine, a woman desperate to track Daniel down and get to the bottom of what he did. Described by the BBC as a “milestone” in inclusive storytelling, with the majority of cast and many members of the crew being deaf or using British Sign Language, we’ve got a very good feeling about what’s to come. Here's everything else you need to know about the upcoming series…
What is Reunion about?
The four-part drama is an emotional thriller of revenge and redemption following the journey of Daniel Brennan, a deaf man who’s determined to right his wrongs. Matthew Gurney leads the cast as recently released prisoner Daniel who finds himself caught between two worlds. On the one hand, he's unable to fully integrate into the hearing world, but he's also shunned by his closest friends and the wider deaf community following his heinous crime.
His only meaningful relationship is seemingly with his estranged daughter Carly (Lara Peake), who he’s had zero contact with since his arrest over a decade ago. Anne-Marie Duff stars as Christine, desperate to find Brennan and get to the truth of what he did, alongside Eddie Marsan as Stephen Renworth, Christine’s protective boyfriend, while Rose Ayling-Ellis plays Miri, her daughter. Anne Marie has said she’s “genuinely thrilled” to be part of the production, while Matthew Gurney has described the scripts as "electrifying".
"It is rare to witness a narrative where the audience is taken on a journey with a very different set of senses," says Anne-Marie. "It’s about our need to acknowledge each other’s truths - both inside our own families and beyond. The team is so extraordinary. I feel very honoured to be rubbing shoulders with them."
