Bachelorette Guest Doesn't Think She Should Have to Pay Even Share of the Tab for 'Big Drinkers and Bill Splitters'

"I do not want to put a downer on things, but I really don't want to pay an even share of the bill and subsidize drinks for everyone else," the guest wrote on Reddit

A bachelorette party guest is worried about the cost of the event — and being obligated to chip in an even share toward the drinks bill.

In a post on Reddit's "Wedding" forum, the guest — who doesn't drink alcohol and is currently tight on money — shared her concerns about evenly splitting the tab with a group who does drink.

The guest shared that she already financed the expense of the upcoming bachelorette party — including the activities, accommodation, meals and travel. It had been communicated to the group that during the weekend itself, attendees would only need to buy drinks and pay tips.

However, the guest said she has significantly less disposable income than most of the other women, and mitigating the costs of attending the wedding itself already has been a major stressor for her.

"My fear is that this is a large group of big drinkers and bill splitters," she wrote. "I do not drink so will not have more than a soft drink at each activity."

She added, "I do not want to put a downer on things, but I really don't want to pay an even share of the bill and subsidize drinks for everyone else. I'll happily pay for what I've had and a portion of the brides' of course."

In the comments, many fellow Redditors suggested that the woman reach out to the maid of honor to discuss what options might be available to her. Some who had been maids of honor in the past noted that, considering the woman doesn't drink and is tight on funds, a request to not evenly split the bill would be perfectly reasonable.

"I would think nothing of someone messaging me to say they aren't drinking and are really tight on budget so would prefer to be on their own checks," one person wrote.

"I planned my friend's bachelorette and would send photos of the receipts in a group message for dinner/drinks and would ask folks to just pay me for what they had plus some money for a tip," another Redditor chimed in.

"This worked for us because it was a small group," they continued. "This to say, in the event the maid of honor does something like this, you can always just give her [money] for what you personally consumed — especially because you let her know beforehand."
