The Canadian singer made her first red carpet appearance in two years when she attended the 25th Annual Race to Erase MS Gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Friday night.

Since revealing in 2015 that she has been struggling with Lyme disease, Lavigne has been living predominantly out of the spotlight. The 33-year-old singer has been taking time to focus on her health, but is finally feeling strong enough to return to the red carpet.

“I haven’t even been able to come to one of these events for a few years,” Lavigne said. “I’ve been tucked away and hibernating and healing, and it’s very up and down. Everything is brighter when you go through an experience like that. I’ve always been a really grounded and grateful person, but it changes a lot. The simple things in life are what mean the most, really. I’m happy to be here, happy to be supporting.”

Lavigne looked glamorous in a semi-sheer black gown with a thigh-high slit and beaded detailing. She wore her hair long and loose — a big departure from the pin-straight middle part we remember from “Complicated.”

Lavigne says she’s been working hard on completing her new album – her first since 2013.

“It’s a really powerful record,” she said. “I’ve been working on this for three years. I can actually say this time I’m going to be done with this album in two weeks and I will put it out this year.”

The “Sk8er boi” singer hopes fans will connect to her new material which she calls “honest and sincere.”

“I’ve gone through a lot of personal stuff in the past two years and so I’ve really drawn from that. I mean, I always do but this album is so different…” Lavigne explained. “It’s more of a vocal record and just like, hearing the lyrics and really hearing the emotion in the vocal. It’s very piano-driven, too.”

Avril has been giving impatient fans a sneak peak of the recording process on Instagram and says she hopes to release her full album later this year.

“I know my fans have been like waiting for a long time and some of them are unhappy. They’re like, ‘OK, what is going on with this album?'” Lavigne said. “But trust me, I’m doing everything I can and I just want it to be ready and everything to be perfect and lot of like, care has gone into this. All the waiting and the hard work on my end will pay off, I promise.”
