What the Autumnal Equinox Means for Your Zodiac Sign

A change of season is upon us as we transition into fall, a period that marks the beginning of shorter days with less sunlight and longer nights with more darkness in the days that follow the autumn equinox.

Officially taking place at 8:43 a.m. ET on Sept. 22 in the Northern Hemisphere (just days after the Harvest full moon), the autumn equinox signifies the arrival of the fall season. There is also a spring equinox which signifies a similar transition, in contrast to the summer and winter solstices that occur.

There's a difference between the two astronomical events: Equinoxes mark a period when days and nights are equal in length, while solstices occur when the days and nights are different in length. The summer solstice marks the longest day of the year, while winter solstices mark the shortest.

The autumn equinox also has astrological significance and always marks the beginning of Libra season. During the first half of the zodiac year, PEOPLE's resident astrologer Kyle Thomas says "we are more focused on our personal lives and personal worlds from Aries to Virgo season."

From Libra to Pisces season, however, Thomas says "our attention expands more significantly into outer worlds and dials in on partnerships, professional heights and expansion beyond the self." He adds, "We can reach more development, vast new experiences and completion."

Aries (March 21 to April 19)

The Autumn Equinox will bring "a fresh chapter" to your partnerships, Aries.

"It is time to address union and understand where you stand in business or love," says Thomas, which "will allow you to grow closer or go your separate ways."

Taurus (April 20 to May 20)

Get ready to "move and groove" at a fast pace, Taurus!

"Productivity is a top priority so assess your work-life balance," says Thomas. "Employment, routines, responsibilities and physical health could be on your mind."

Gemini (May 21 to June 20)

Let the "magic of love" fill your heart and soul, Gemini!

According to Thomas, the autumn equinox "will usher in a period that allows you to enjoy more of what life has to offer." In addition, it will allow you to "pursue romance, fertility, creativity and your heart’s desires."

Cancer (June 21 to July 22)

The Autumn Equinox "will aid" you, Cancer.

According to Thomas, this period of time will be advantageous when "reflecting on your past, heritage and traditions." He says, "This is a positive period to turn within as you connect with home, family and domesticity... so embrace it!"

Leo (July 23 to Aug. 22)

The Autumn Equinox is "pushing you to explore" more of life, Leo!

"This is a fantastic period to embrace connection with others, as well as learn, speak, write and grow," says Thomas. "Travel could also be menu, so prepare to get adventurous!"

Virgo (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22)

Mind your money, Virgo!

The Autumn Equinox is putting "a bigger focus on your financial life," Thomas points out. "You’re ready to monetize and make more — however, assess your budget and strategize ways to build your pot of gold effectively."

Libra (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22)

You’re ready to "step into the spotlight," Libra!

The autumn equinox is "a core period of the year," notes Thomas. This is a time when you are "able to assert yourself, built toward your goals and embrace your beauty and authenticity... so make the most of it!"

Scorpio (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21)

This period of the year is "telling you to reflect," Scorpio.

Thomas advises "looking deep into your need for serenity, healing and compassion." While you may find yourself lying low around the autumn equinox, he says "you'll find this time can be very rejuvenating!"

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21)

You’re in "a spotlight period" thanks to the autumn equinox, Sagittarius!
