Q. I’m looking to buy some new black ankle boots. I would like a pair with a heel that’s not too high and that will go with everything in my wardrobe, but which style should I choose? - Anita, 48

Nothing beats the versatility of a black boot. I’m on a constant quest for the perfect pair – not too stompy, not too high, not too casual, not too glam, but not too boring, either. I’m not asking much from a boot, am I? Black boots are an investment buy, for sure, but one that will earn their keep many times over – and, let’s face it, they make everything look cool.

This season, I’m loving the all-day-friendly, teeny-tiny kitten heel. Russell & Bromley and Cos have some brilliant sleek, pointed toes that will add a sexy edge to denim and tailoring. If you’re naturally drawn to a more casual utility boot (like me), look to a sturdy block heel Chelsea boot. John Lewis and M&S have some great styles that are slightly longer than an average ankle boot, which feel more polished and look just as good with a luxe knitted dress as they do with jeans and a blazer. You will never grow tired of black boots!
