We ask 17 celebs about their best home bargains
We love a great bargain find – that satisfying moment when you come across something that looks way more expensive than it really is. As it turns out, even celebrities are still partial to a good deal. We asked them about their most cherished but cheap-as-chips homeware finds. Here are their answers...
Nadiya Hussain, presenter and The Great British Bake Off winner
'A lot of my crockery is from charity shops. I love a secondhand find.'
Angela Scanlon, TV presenter
'For Your Home Made Perfect we customised a slab of terrazzo marble from Diespeker & Co in south London. I might have taken the slab as well as tiny square samples, which I use as coasters. The slab is currently sitting on top of an Ikea side table with a lamp on it.'
Peter Andre, singer
'Well, I used to say to my dad, "I went to the sale and saved 15 per cent’, and he’d say ‘no you didn’t, you spent 85 per cent", so I’m not a massive bargain hunter.'
Rosemary Shrager, celebrity chef and novelist
'A £2.90 paint scraper. It’s great for patisserie and baking because it makes a very thin line. I love it.'
Gabby Logan, presenter and author
'Re-upholstery. I’ve had some chairs for 20 years, and 16 years ago we bought an enormous painting of a cow in Scotland by Jenny Kerr. We paid about £1,000 and it’s now worth £4,000 to £5,000.'
Adjoa Andoh, actress
'A delicately carved chaise longue that my mother bought for about £20 at auction in the early 1970s. It’s in my living room and is beautiful.'
Frankie Bridge, singer and TV presenter
'My new drinks trolley. It’s a great addition to the dining room.'
Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, interior designer
'Jackie [my wife]. For such an incandescent, gorgeous pinnacle of glamour, she’s extraordinarily thrifty and cheap to run. In fact, it’s difficult persuading her to spend money on herself. At the head of our dynasty, she juggles 24-hour childcare, occasional aqua-fit and tending the vegetable garden.'
Gemma Sheppard, TV fashion expert
'Aside from inherited furniture, such as my grandmother’s now-refurbished jam cupboard, I spent €30 on a spectacular oversized brass palm lamp from Ibiza Troc – a huge secondhand boutique. I think it’s worth a lot of money!'
Denise Van Outen, TV presenter and actress
'A pair of gold gilt frames with pictures of flowers inside, which I bought from a charity shop for £2.'
Ruth Langsford, TV presenter
'My mum has a beautiful Murano glass green and blue paperweight. I found something very similar in a charity shop, and bought it for her.'
Paul McKenna, motivational guru
'My MacBook Pro. I use it for video conferencing, watching films, listening to music and any radio station in the world. For £2,000, it’s the best value.'
Priyanga Burford, actress
'Our plants, which came from cuttings. Where I live, people often put little tables outside their front gates offering cuttings of plants in exchange for money in an honesty box, then that money goes to charity. It’s a lovely thing to do.'
Gabby Roslin, radio and TV presenter
'Our pullout wooden dining room table from Ikea that we bought when we moved in. A big round table from my old house didn’t work here so I went to Ikea and bought one on display for less than £100. I then sanded it down and painted it. Every now and again I paint it a different colour. At the moment, it's pale grey on top with dark grey legs.'
Lisa Faulkner, TV presenter
'I’ve got many beautiful tea and coffee pots and pieces of china that I know are really expensive, which I picked up for cheap prices. My mother was like a magpie at jumble sales, antiques and charity shops and I’m the same. I use everything that Mum had on display because I don’t believe in saving it for best. Life’s too short!'
Angellica Bell, TV presenter
'An old London Underground sign I found at the tip; it's now on my kitchen wall. We also picked up a pair of side tables, which we upcycled using Annie Sloan chalk paint, then sold.'
Anthea Turner, TV presenter and author
'A couple of two-foot-tall silver glass urns that I bought from TK Maxx for £14 each. They look like I spent hundreds on them. They’re on my dining room table and are so elegant.'
