Ariana Grande’s low-cut leather levitating skater dress is defying gravity
It's no secret method dressing took Hollywood red carpets by storm after Margot Robbie recreated actual Barbie outfits from decades past at every premiere of the Barbie film's world press tour. Zendaya followed suit, repping sci-fi chic ensembles and tennis-themed garb for Dune: Part Two and Challengers promo, respectively. And – if their recent looks are anything to go by – it seems Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have both got the memo ahead of the upcoming release of the movie musical Wicked.
From the Oscars to the Olympics, the duo has been repeatedly stepping out in pink and green outfits in reference to their characters. Grande's Glinda the Good Witch is known for her feminine effervescence and love of the colour pink, while Elphaba AKA the Wicked Witch of the West is... well, literally green.
But, it's safe to say Ariana just seriously upped the ante.
The artist and actress is set to host Saturday Night Live this weekend [Saturday 12 October] and appeared in a video shared on Instagram to promote the episode wearing a low, scoop neck brown leather dress from JW Anderson's SS25 collection. Crucially, the design is a flying saucer silhouette, featuring a flared skirt extending out from the straight-cut bodice at an almost horizontal angle that defies gravity.
Confused as to how this qualifies as method dressing? Arguably the biggest song in the entire musical, occurring right at the plot's climax, is titled ‘Defying Gravity’ performed by Elphaba. Which is exactly what Ariana's dress is doing! Side note: Trust us when we say if you don't know what we're talking about, you *need* to immediately go and watch Idina Menzel (who played Elphaba in the original production of the musical on Broadway and won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal) sing this song on YouTube.
While Ariana's 'fit is certainly a more subtle nod to her next project, it's the fashion-forward take on method dressing we've been waiting for. After all, anyone can wear pink but not everyone can pull off that dress. Luckily, Ariana did it with ease, finishing the look with sheer black tights and coordinating brown leather court shoes.
Counting down the days until we can see Ariana in action as Glinda!
