'Anxious' Coleen Rooney worried about Wayne after back injury

Wayne Rooney sparked concern among fans when he pulled out of his debut appearance on Match of the Day on Saturday 13 April, citing a recent back injury as the reason for his absence. Among those worried about the former footballer’s health is his wife Coleen, who has been left taking care of him at home.

Wayne, 38, sustained the injury while on a family break with Coleen, 39, and their children Kai, 14, Klay, 10, Kit, seven, and Cass, six.

Just moments before Match of the Day aired, Wayne took to X, formerly Twitter, to explain his absence. He wrote, “Gutted not to be making my debut on the iconic @BBCMOTD show tonight, it’s something I have wanted to do since I was little.

"Unfortunately I have sustained a painful back injury during a holiday with my family but I look forward to being part of the team in the near future. Good luck to @GaryLineker and the guys for tonights show and see you soon."

Fans were quick to send him well wishes, with one writing, "Get well soon Wayne - looking forward to see you on @BBCMOTD soon." While another penned, "Speedy recovery champ!" And a third added, "Get well soon mate.... Back pain is awful."

And now, a source close to the couple has told OK! that Coleen's been left particularly worried for her husband following his injury, and that the wider Rooney family, and Coleen's mother, have gathered around to help out during this tricky time.

They said, "Obviously, Coleen is worried about Wayne’s back - it’s an injury he sustained playing football. It’s one of those niggly injuries but he’s been in such a lot of pain. He’s a tough lad so it must have been bad for him to pull out of Match of the Day, so they’re both worried. But he is in the best hands, and Coleen has her mum there to help and both their families are giving a helping hand."

Wayne, who was previously considering a move to boxing, was hoping the use his Match of the Day appearance to launch a career in punditry, something that would keep him closer to home. Punditry would likely also receive much more support from Coleen, who was previously said to have concerns over a move to boxing, which she had labelled "dangerous."

Alongside causing worry for the Rooney family, Wayne’s back injury has also put a halt on his newest career goals, which would see him join a number of other football legends in the world of sports punditry.

The source added, "Wayne was really looking forward to the show, as it’s relaunching him in a new career and Coleen was really excited for him, but the pain was just too bad for him to go on. It’s a bit of a nightmare for him. Backs can be very tricky and obviously she’s anxious and worried but everyone’s keeping their fingers crossed that he’ll be back in good form soon.

"She likes to keep Wayne busy, because it’s when he’s not busy that he tends to get into trouble. They’re in a really good place at the minute and Coleen wants to keep him on the straight and narrow. It’s a worrying time for Coleen and it’s a shame because they were both really looking forward to that moment when he relaunched his new career in television."

And, while some families would be left panicking over a similar injury, with one parent being unexpectedly thrown into solo-parenting, this is something that Coleen has gotten used to over the years, with Wayne’s career often taking him around the world.

Just two years ago, he would be regularly jetting off to America after taking over as manager for D.C. United, leaving Coleen to take care of the children alone for weeks at a time.

Our source said, "She’s used to looking after the kids on her own and that’s not a worry for her. He’s been away from home loads before, like when he worked in Washington, she would have to stay at home looking after the children."

Wayne left D.C. United in 2023 and embarked on a brief stint as manager of Birmingham City, a role he left earlier this year, after the team won just twice in 15 matches. Since then, he had been spending much more time with his family, but with a painful back injury to deal with, it seems that Coleen will once again be taking on a greater load - and trying to keep her hubby entertained!
