For those of us that love sneaking a peek into the sheds of our fellow garden lovers, you'll likely be delighted to know that the annual Shed of the Year competition from Cuprinol has returned for 2024 and is officially open for submission.

While the rest of us have been endeavouring to stop our sheds from getting mouldy during the winter, others have been busy creating the shed of their dreams, whether that's in the form of a buzzing entertainment space, or a calm retreat to enjoy your favourite hobby.

So if this is you, and you think your shed might stand a chance of winning, it may well be worth considering entering Cuprinol's Shed of the Year competition. Now in its 18th year, the contest sees people from all over the UK enter their sheds into a variety of categories, competing for titles including best budget shed and most colourful shed.

Shed of the Year categories 2024:

If you've recently breathed new life into your shed space and created something you're particularly proud of, there are nine categories to choose from:

  • Most colourful shed

  • Pub or entertainment

  • Workshop or studio

  • Simple but effective

  • Unexpected/unique

  • Nature's haven

  • Cabin or summerhouse

  • Young 'Sheddie' of the Year

  • Budget

New for 2024, the Young 'Sheddie' of the Year category implores budding architects or artists aged between 18-25 to make their mark on their shed and share it with the world.

Head judge and founder of the Shed of the Year Awards, Andrew Wilcox, explains that he's looking forward to seeing how the events of 2024 might influence shed designs this year.

'It will be very fascinating to see how the upcoming summer of sport events might inspire the entries in our pub and entertainment category. We’ve seen a growing number of participants using recycled materials and making more sustainable choices when it comes to creating their sheds – these are factors we’ll consider closely as we select finalists for the Nature’s Haven category this year.'

How to enter the Shed of the Year competition

To enter, head over to Reader Sheds and submit a minimum of six pictures of your shed. You'll also need to share a bit about why you've designed and created the shed in the way you have, as well as some insights into why you think it's one of the best around.

Entries will be placed into an initial shortlist by a panel of judges. This shortlist will then be put to a public vote via the website to choose the category winners. Then, a final judging panel will choose the ultimate Shed of the Year 2024.

There's a great incentive to win the Shed of the Year title, too (aside from bragging rights, of course). The winner will not only bag themselves a £1,000 cash prize and £250 worth of Cuprinol products – they'll also get to enjoy an overnight stay in a relaxing nature resort, too.

If you want to enter, you've still got a little bit of time, as entries will close on 31st May 2024 at midnight. Good luck!

Who won Shed of the Year in 2023?

If you're after a bit of inspiration for your shed makeover (or just want to work out how best to woo the judges), allow us to introduce you to Archie Proudfoot and his 'Frankenshed', the winner of the Shed of the Year competition in 2023.

'Last year, we crowned Archie Proudfoot our winner – he submitted his shed into the then-recently introduced Most Colourful Shed category,' says Andrew. 'His fresh approach and vibrant use of colour made him a worthy winner.'

It's easy to see why Archie's masterpiece stood out; his shed was reinvigorated with the use of recycled timber, featuring an array of stunningly colourful and artistic designs on both the ceiling and the window. We could easily while away many hours in there getting our creative juices flowing!
