Anne Hathaway’s gold ballgown is straight out of The Princess Diaries

Our lives were officially made when Anne Hathaway took to Instagram in October 2024 to share the most iconic reaction to the news that The Princess Diaries 3 was officially in the works. Yep, it doesn't get much more nostalgic for millennial girlies (coming from a millennial girlie) than The Princess Diaries 1 & 2, AKA the 2001 and 2004 adaptations of Meg Cabot's novel series, starring Anne and acting legend Julie Andrews.

While there's still no news of when we can expect a release date *sigh*, Anne's latest look to attend the opening of the Bulgari Infinity Serpents Exhibition in Shanghai, China last night [Wednesday 8 January] has reignited our excitement as her ensemble is channelling her character from the films, Princess Mia. Or, to use her full and official name, Amelia Mignonette Grimaldi Thermopolis Renaldo, Princess of Genovia.

Check out her stunning look for yourself:

Anne wore a gold, strapless Oscar de la Renta gown that featured a sculptural silhouette with a protruding, stiff neckline and flared skirt that seemed frozen in mid-air as if caught by a gust of wind. She stuck to the colour with her choice of footwear, adding gold croc-effect Louboutin peep-toe heels, and as a long-time ambassador for the luxury Italian jewellery house, naturally turned to the brand for her accessories. A Bulgari gold collar necklace fashioned to look like two intertwining serpents, adorned with diamonds and blue and red jewels and diamond jewelled serpent-head earrings to match provided extra sparkle.

Anne kept her hair and makeup elegantly simple in contrast, opting for a no-fuss French bun with a deep side part, a pop of rose blush and a matching lip. All in all, the look could easily double as a costume from The Princess Diaries. There she is, our Princess of Genovia!
