I was recently going through my hallway closet; it’s officially the time of year when I must swap out my lightweight jackets for heavier outerwear suitable for the colder temps. I do this because, yes, I’m an organization freak who needs things in their proper place, but also because I, like most New Yorkers, don’t have the closet space to house all my seasonal jackets at the same time. (Frown face.) But, while going through all my toppers, I pulled out one I’ve sorely missed—and funnily enough, Angelina Jolie was recently spotted in it, propelling me to keep in on hand for a little bit longer. Hey, you can make anything work if you really want to, right?

Jolie was spotted out and about looking as chic as ever, as she usually does. If you think about one celebrity who’s perfected this idea of a capsule wardrobe—only relying on tried-and-true staples and never straying from those—it’s Jolie. She’s made black pants, black dresses, heels, and, last but certainly not least, trench coats, the bread and butter of her outfits, proving that less really is more when it comes to your closet.

A trench coat is a trusty, forever piece that people tend to wear in the spring. Some might associate it with being water-resistant, and it’s certainly known to be a more utilitarian-leaning staple, a dressing style we’ve seen come back big in recent years. But, aside from the functionality of the trench (and all of its pockets, belts, and lapels), I have a hot take on the trench: It makes all my outfits look more expensive, in turn, making me look rich. It’s elegant, elevated, and timeless. And while sure, it matters how you wear it, a trench really doesn’t need much work to make its statement. It stands on its own, which basically makes it an outfit in one. Love!

Jolie paired hers over a black velvet maxi dress, further elevating the luxe look. And therein lies another plus of this topper: It’s versatile. You can wear it with the most elegant dresses and it works, or you can wear it with jeans and white tee for a more cool-girl moment. Whatever you do, the trench will make it look like you have everything together (even though you don’t, like me at the moment!), and I’ll take that sliver of hope for now.

Amal Clooney is also a fan of the trench, as are a slew of other celebs, so clearly, this one has a chokehold on everyone. Shop some that are currently in my virtual shopping cart below.
