Andrew Scott has just landed a new lead movie role in war thriller Pressure, following his compelling turn in Andrew Haigh's acclaimed drama All of Us Strangers.

Set in the lead up to D-Day, the movie chronicles the true story of the three days before the Allied invasion of Normandy, one of the crucial World War II events that would lead to the liberation of France and Western Europe in 1944.

"In the seventy two hours leading up to D-Day, all the pieces are in place except for one key element — the British weather," the logline reads.

Scott is to play Britain's chief meteorological officer James Stagg. Called upon to deliver the most consequential forecast in history, Stagg enters a tense standoff with the entire Allied leadership as the adverse conditions could devastate the largest-ever seaborne invasion, while any delay risks German intelligence picking up on the plan.

"With his trusted aide Captain Kay Summersby to confide in, and haunted by a catastrophic D-Day rehearsal, the final decision rests with Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower," the synopsis continues. "With only hours to go, the fate of the war and the lives of millions hang in the balance."

Directed by Anthony Maras, who co-wrote the script with David Haig, Pressure is expected to start shooting in the UK this September.

Scott has just received an Emmy nomination for his performance as con-man Tom Ripley in Netflix's Ripley, an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's 1955 novel The Talented Mr Ripley.

The cast of the black-and-white, noir limited series from creator Steven Zaillian includes Dakota Fanning, who's also up for an Emmy in September, as well as Johnny Flynn and Eliot Sumner.

Pressure is yet to receive a release date.
