  • Amy Schumer opened up about taking Ozempic and losing 30 pounds.

  • She also shared that she was “bedridden” with nausea, which is why she ultimately stopped taking the medication.

  • “But other people take it and they’re all good. So, God bless them,” she said.

In promoting her new movie, Kinda Pregnant, Amy Schumer opened up about taking Ozempic and losing 30 pounds. The comedian appeared on The Howard Stern Show and said that she took the type 2 diabetes medication that aids with weight loss three years ago, but ultimately stopped due to overwhelming nausea.

“I lost 30 pounds so quick. I looked great, but I couldn’t lift my head off the pillow. So what’s the point?” she recalled. She added that she wasn’t even well enough to play with her young son. “I was like bedridden. I was like, vomiting—and then you have no energy. But other people take it and they’re all good. So, God bless them,” she said.

Schumer said her illness wasn’t all the medication’s fault, though.“I have this gene, GDF-15, which makes you extremely prone to nausea, which is why I was so sick during my pregnancy,” she explained. GDF-15, also known as Growth differentiation factor 15, is actually a protein expressed by tissues under oxidative stress, inflammation, and aging. There is research that shows it can be more present in maternal blood during pregnancy and lead to stomach issues.

However, nausea is a common Ozempic side effect, as are reflux, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and stomach pain. “These symptoms will occur initially in most people, then resolve. However, symptoms may persist in a significant number of individuals,” Florence Comite, M.D., founder of the Comite Center for Precision Medicine & Health previously told Prevention. “Others will see an uptick with any increase in dose, which should subside after taking the medication for two to three weeks.”

Eventually, Schumer decided that being on the medication “wasn’t livable” for her, she said on Watch What Happens Live in 2023, per People. She also urged her fellow celebrities to be honest about taking weight loss medication. “Everyone has been lying saying, ‘Oh smaller portions.’ Like shut the f*ck up. You are on Ozempic or one of those things or you got work done. Just stop,” she said. “Be real with the people. When I got lipo, I said I got lipo.”

Although Schumer has recently opened up about how Cushing syndrome changed her appearance over the last few years, she did not discuss weight regain after ceasing Ozempic. But it is known to happen. “Some people may experience a return of increased appetite over time, resulting in weight gain,” Steven Batash, M.D., gastroenterologist and leading physician at Batash Endoscopic Weight Loss previously told Prevention. “These medications have proven to be a potent tool in treating obesity, provided they continue taking the medication.”

That’s why it’s important to also implement lifestyle changes like diet and exercise during treatment. “If you do this correctly and you use the time you’re on the medication to modify lifestyle habits,” Dina Peralta-Reich, M.D., director of New York Weight Wellness Medicine previously told Prevention, “you will eventually be able to maintain the weight on your own.”
