American Crime Story's third season will follow the impeachment trial of Bill Clinton following his relationship with Monica Lewinsky that shook the world in the mid 1990s.

The FX franchise has Lewinsky on board to produce, with Lewinsky saying it was down to creator Ryan Murphy's dedication to "giving a voice to the marginalised" that persuaded her to sign on to the series. Here's everything we know about Impeachment: American Crime Story.

What's Impeachment: American Crime Story about?

It was reported back in 2017 that Murphy wanted to adapt Jeffrey Toobin's 2000 book A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President, but would only make it with former White House intern Lewinsky contributing.

Murphy previously recalled bumping into Lewinsky at a party last year and telling her: "Nobody should tell your story but you, and it’s kind of gross if they do. If you want to produce it with me, I would love that; but you should be the producer, and you should make all the goddamn money."

Lewinsky has told Vanity Fair that she was finally able to "reclaim her narrative" after decades of being vilified by the press, despite Clinton being in the highest position of power, and previously confronted with allegations of sexual misconduct during his time as Governor of Arkansas.

"I was hesitant, and truthfully more than a little scared to sign on," Lewinsky said. "But after a lengthy dinner meeting with Ryan, I came to understand even more clearly how dedicated he is to giving a voice to the marginalised in all of his brilliant work. I’m privileged to work with him and the other talented people on the team, and I’m privileged to have this opportunity.

"People have been co-opting and telling my part in this story for decades. In fact, it wasn't until the past few years that I've been able to fully reclaim my narrative; almost 20 years later."

Who has been cast in Impeachment: American Crime Story?

Sarah Paulson will play Linda Tripp, a former civil servant who secretly recorded Monica Lewinsky's confidential phone calls about her relationship with the president. Ladybird's Beanie Feldstein will star as Lewinsky, and Annaleigh Ashford will play Paula Jones, a former Arkansas state employee who sued Clinton for sexual harassment. Clinton continues to deny the claims.

In March 2021 producers announced that The Sopranos star Edie Falco will play Hilary Clinton, starring alongside Children of Men star Clive Owen as Bill Clinton.

Sarah Burgess will write and executive-produce the project, which "will explore the overlooked dimensions of the women who found themselves caught up in the scandal and political war that cast a long shadow over the Clinton presidency", according to FX Networks chairman John Landgraf.

When is Impeachment: American Crime Story being released?

It will arrive in the US on 7 September 2021. A UK air date has yet to be confirmed.
