Amazing Destinations To Visit In Your 50s

Every decade of life brings new experiences, joys, challenges and opportunities for growth. Your 50s are particularly special time to grow by exploring the world.

“When I turned 50, I made a promise to myself: I was going to travel for me,” Tomiko Harvey, founder of Passports & Grub, told HuffPost. “No more waiting for the ‘right time’ or putting my bucket list on hold because, well, I am well into my 50s. I want to soak up every bit of luxury, culture and adventure along the way, including trips with my hubby, girlfriends and solo.”

To inspire all the quinquagenarian vacationers out there, we asked Harvey and other seasoned travelers who are 50-plus to share the destinations they recommend visiting at this age. From scenic road trips and relaxing island stays to epic adventures and magical sights, there’s something for every traveler.

Andros, Greece

"For 50-plus travelers looking for a fun and active sunshine holiday, I can highly recommend the Greek island of Andros," said travel blogger Heather Cowper. "Only two hours by ferry from Athens, there’s a relaxed and authentic atmosphere that’s a world away from the busier islands of Mykonos and Santorini nearby."

She recommended visiting the many beaches, swimming under waterfalls, hiking around the 240km of marked trails and enjoying the delicious food in the charming island town of Chora.

Arusha, Tanzania

"Arusha, Tanzania, is a great place to visit in your 50s!" said travel writer Francis Tapon. "Climbing Kilimanjaro is extremely difficult for senior citizens, but most people in their 50s can still summit Africa’s tallest peak if they spend a few months getting in shape ahead of time and take the one-week itinerary."

He added that many 50-somethings have saved enough money to enjoy the expensive but once-in-a-lifetime experience of a Serengeti safari.

"Do these two activities while you still have stamina, strength and cash," Tapon urged.

Cappadocia, Turkey

"Cappadocia is nothing short of magical," said travel writer Patti Morrow. "Located in central Turkey, it’s famous for its unique 'fairy chimneys' — towering, cone-shaped rock formations and Bronze Age homes carved into valley walls by cave dwellers and later used as refuges by early Christians seeking to avoid persecution."

In her opinion, the best way to experience this surreal landscape is by taking a sunrise hot air balloon ride.

"For those afraid of heights, it is just as enchanting to watch the balloons from the rooftop viewing terrace of one of the cave hotels," Morrow added.

Piedmont, Italy

Piedmont, Italy

"One region in Italy that I think is perfect for 50-somethings is Piedmont, in the country's northwest," Keith Jenkins, founder and publisher of the Velvet Escape luxury travel blog.

While the capital city of Turin is a lovely place to visit for a few days, he recommends spending more time exploring the broader region.

"From the glistening peaks of the Italian Alps to the gentle hills of Monferrato and the spa towns of Lago Maggiore, there's so much to experience in this diverse region," Jenkins said. "Home of the Barolo, Piedmont also has a tantalizing array of exquisite wines and some of the best cuisine in the country. You won't find the crowds of Rome, Venice or Tuscany here, so if you're looking to avoid the masses and immerse yourself in art, culture, history and nature, head to Piedmont."

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

"San Miguel de Allende is the perfect travel destination in your 50s — especially for women looking to experience a vibrant, culturally rich, and visually stunning place that feels both welcoming and inspiring," said S. Anne Marie Archer, aka BaldGirlWillTravel.

She praised the city's perfect balance of adventure and comfort, mild climate, thriving arts scene, welcoming community, relaxing hot springs and vibrant Día de Muertos celebrations.

"The culinary scene in San Miguel is exceptional, offering everything from authentic Mexican street food to gourmet international cuisine," Archer said. "When the sun goes down, San Miguel comes alive with live music, bars, and rooftop lounges that create an incredible evening atmosphere. Whether you love intimate jazz clubs, lively cantinas or elegant cocktail bars, there’s always something happening."

Adelaide Hills, Australia

"The Adelaide Hills is a perfect getaway for over-50s looking for a scenic and relaxing road trip from Adelaide,"said Lisa Bundesen, creator of The Middle Age Wanderer. "Just a 30-minute drive from the city, the rolling hills, charming towns and award-winning wineries make it a must-visit destination."

In addition to enjoying the region's world-renowned white wine, she recommended stopping in Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest German settlement, to stroll the charming streets, shop and enjoy the local food — especially the famous chocolates.

"Indulge in local delights while soaking in the fresh country air and stunning views," Bundesen said. "With so much to see, taste and explore, the Adelaide Hills is a dream destination for a relaxing and indulgent escape."

"If you enjoy wave watching and beach combing, head to the Oregon coast," said travel writer Nancy D. Brown. "Oregon coast hotels have built a business around storm watching. Oregon’s beaches are less crowded than parts of the California coast."

She recommended Surfsand Resort in Cannon Beach, which was recently remodeled and is a prime destination for multigenerational trips and dog-friendly coastal escapes.

Mauritius

Mauritius

"This paradise island nation in the Indian Ocean boasts turquoise lagoons and blinding white beaches, bustling towns, colorful markets and a mountainous interior that begs to be explored," Jenkins said. "It's an island where I can take my time to enjoy the local culture, the glorious sunsets (with a cocktail in hand) and the mesmerizing lagoons."

As for accommodations, Mauritius has luxury resorts, charming beachside bed and breakfasts and everything in between, he added.

Michinoku Coastal Trail, Japan

"At 55, I’m all about active travel — getting out there to hike, bike and explore while I still can," said travel blogger Sherry Ott. "If you’re in your 50s and looking for an adventure that’s off the beaten path but rich in culture and connection, Japan’s Michinoku Coastal Trail is a must. Stretching 622 miles along the rugged, scenic coast of the Tohoku region, this long-distance hiking trail is more than just a walk — it’s a journey through resilience and renewal."

Although the area was devastated by the 2011 earthquake, she noted that the local communities have rebuilt their homes "with incredible strength." It's not uncommon to meet people eager to share their stories and showcase the beautiful landscape.

"The best part? You don’t have to hike all 622 miles. Opt for a week-long section and enjoy the highlights at your own pace," Ott added. "And after a day on the trail, nothing beats sinking into a steaming onsen to soothe those well-earned aches. For anyone in their 50s who wants an adventure that blends nature, culture, and a bit of indulgence, this is it!"

Sweden

"Sweden’s big draw is nature itself," said Kristin Henning, a travel writer and co-founder of TravelPast50. "For travelers in their 50s — whether going solo, in pairs, or in groups — the combination of modern cities like Stockholm, Malmö and Gothenburg with gorgeous landscapes and a rich cultural history satisfies a whole range of travelers’ desires."

She highlighted the world-class museums and historic sites showcasing contemporary art, Nobel Prizes, ABBA artifacts and even a fascinating 17th century ship. The public transit and ease of communicating in English make Sweden simple for Americans to navigate.

"In nature, discover sailing and water sports in the archipelago," Henning added." Enjoy hiking, biking, and skiing in the mountains around Åre, where seasonal clothing can be rented."

"All across Sweden, she went on, "find spectacular food based on fresh local products and welcoming people in cozy environments scattered across the heartland. Coffee and cardamom rolls taste even better by a fire."

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka

"Sri Lanka is a dream destination for over-50s, offering a mix of wildlife, culture, delicious food and warm hospitality," Bundesen said. "This island nation is easy to explore, with something special at every turn."

For Bundesen, the highlight of a Sri Lanka visit is a safari in Yala National Park, where you can spot elephants, leopards, exotic birds and more. She recommends Kulu Safaris as your adventure host.

"Beyond wildlife, Sri Lanka’s vibrant food scene is a treat," she added. "From fragrant curries to fresh seafood and famous Ceylon tea, every meal is a delight. The friendly locals make the experience even better, welcoming visitors with genuine warmth. For a more relaxed pace, explore ancient temples, lush tea plantations and stunning beaches."

Bologna, Italy

Bologna, Italy

"Bologna is the perfect destination for those looking for an authentic Italian experience without the crowds," said Irene S. Levine, a travel journalist and producer of MoreTimeToTravel. "This city is rich in art, architecture, history, and culture, and offers a more relaxed ambiance than Rome, Venice, or Florence."

She praised the city's iconic covered walkways, magnificent central square, the Piazza Maggiore, and of course, the fantastic cuisine.

"The Emilia Romagna region and its capital city, Bologna, are a mecca for food lovers," Levine said. "The region is known as Italy’s 'Food Valley' because of its PDO products like parmigiano reggiano cheese, prosciutto di Parma, mortadella and balsamic vinegar, and its celebrated dishes such as tagliatelle, tortellini and lasagna Bolognese. If you ask Italians where they’d most like to dine after their mother’s kitchen, Bologna would likely be their answer."

Thailand

Thailand

"When I wanted a mix of relaxation and culture, and Phuket delivered," Harvey said. "This island is so much more than just beaches — it’s wellness retreats, breathtaking island-hopping tours, and some of the best massages I’ve ever had. I started my mornings with yoga, ate the most flavorful street food, and even took a boat tour to the famous Phi Phi Islands."

The beauty of Thailand is that you can indulge without breaking the bank, she added.

Travel writer Barbara Weibel similarly praised Thailand for its opportunities for authentic cultural immersion and wide array of tourist experiences.

"Most visitors to Thailand start in Bangkok — the thriving, pulsating, fast-paced capital city that is home to the Grand Palace, famous temples such as Wat Po and Wat Arun, the world’s largest weekend market Chatuchak, a mind-numbing array of upscale shopping centers and the largest Chinatown in the world," she said.

"But Thailand is more than Bangkok," she added. "The south is famous for stunningly beautiful beaches, while the north features the country’s highest mountains, where residents of hill tribe villages open their homes to visitors and allow them to participate in daily village life. The Jewel of the North, Chiang Mai, features breathtaking festivals and some of the world’s most delicious food."

Inside Passage, Alaska

"An Inside Passage cruise in Alaska is an unforgettable experience, especially for over-50s who love adventure without sacrificing comfort," Bundesen said. "Gliding through glacier-carved fjords and snow-capped peaks, every view feels like a postcard come to life — all from the comfort of a luxury cruise ship."

She also raved about the fresh Alaskan seafood, stunning Davidson Glacier and charming port cities like Juneau. And spending a day in Glacier Bay is one of her most magical memories.

"Watching massive ice sheets break off and crash into the sea is nature at its most powerful and breathtaking," Bundesen said. "Off the ship, the adventures are just as exciting. Imagine taking a floatplane deep into the Alaskan wilderness, landing in remote bear country to watch brown bears fishing for salmon — a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience."

Morocco

Morocco

"Morocco should be on everyone's over-50 travel to-do list," said travel content creator Lisa James. "Let’s face it, if you are in your 50s, you deserve a bit of magic in your life, and Morocco is that magic. Morocco is truly a country where adventure has no expiration date. It is for travelers who want everything: coastal calm, mountain retreats, desert romances, cities that feel as if you’ve stepped into the pages of a childhood book of far off lands. "

She's a fan of sipping a simple cup of mint tea while people watching at the Jemaa el-Fnaa Medina in Marrakech, then diving into the hustle and bustle of the souk.

"If you want to start out slow and work your way to the chaos of Marrakech, start in the less talked-about Rabat," James suggested. "With its wide avenues lined with imposing palm trees, its cleanliness and cosmopolitan vibe, a few days moving slow will prepare you for a visit to Fez. Fez is the younger cousin of Marrakech — less imposing and calmer. But the beauty of Fez is the history and a sense of stepping back in time. And don’t forget the well preserved and sprawling Roman ruins only two hours for Fez."

"Located around 160 miles from Tahiti, Bora Bora is surrounded by an iridescent turquoise lagoon, tiny islets called 'motu,' and a barrier reef," Morrow said. "James Michener proclaimed it to be 'the most beautiful island in the world' and I agree."

Visitors can snorkel in crystal-clear coral gardens and explore the lush landscape by hiking or Jeep.

"Staying in an iconic overwater bungalow, while pricey, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience," Morrow said.

Morrow recommends taking a safari vacation in Kenya in your 50s.

"There are plenty of great reasons to go on a safari," she said. "Whether you want to see the Great Migration or get up close and personal with the Big Five, a safari in Africa will never disappoint.

She noted you can choose from a range of safari options, from budget to luxury.

"In addition to the wildlife, the landscapes are breathtaking, and the bush experiences are like nothing you’ve experienced before," Morrow added. "It is impossible not to be changed by a safari."

Seville, Spain

Seville, Spain

"In many ways, Seville could be considered the most Spanish of all Spanish towns, and that’s why we recommend it to inquisitive travelers," said Tom Bartel, a travel writer and co-founder of TravelPast50. "It has lovely walking neighborhoods such as Santa Cruz that feature picturesque, flowered balconies and fountained patios. It has a world-class fine art museum, the Museo de Bellas Artes."

He also touted the city's authentic flamenco culture, monumental cathedral, Moorish palace and old Jewish quarter, which speak to the rich history of the Andalucía region.

"Classic tapas bars and family-owned restaurants can be found on nearly every corner of Seville," Bartel added. "And, if that’s your thing, it has bullfights. In short, it can be a completely immersive experience for someone of a certain age who is culturally astute."

Colorado

Colorado

"As an equestrian travel expert with two hip replacements, I prefer soft adventure activities with my experience-driven vacations," Brown said. "With that in mind, I took a solo trip to Vista Verde Ranch near Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Not only does the ranch offer horseback riding, but they also have fly fishing in a freestone river."

She also enjoyed the opportunities for hiking and biking and the sight of the leaves changing colors in the fall.

Nepal

Nepal

"As we get older, our travels become less about relaxation and partying, and more about having authentic, unique cultural experiences," Weibel said. "Nepal has a staggering seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Kathmandu Valley alone."

For those who are adventurous, she believes the destination is great for independent travel, rather than taking a pre-arranged tour.

"The northern [part] of the country is home to the world’s highest mountains, which rise above the plains in their snow-capped majesty," Weibel said. "The southern steamy jungles are home to national parks where visitors can see tigers and black rhinos in the wild. And the center of the country is home to the lakeside city of Pokhara, the second most popular destination in the country after Kathmandu and perhaps the best opportunity for cultural immersion."

"If you’ve explored Paris, Provence and the Riviera, but want to see a side of France that’s off  the usual tourist trail, it’s time to discover the Canal du Midi," said Deborah Bine aka Barefoot Blogger. "This 17th-century waterway stretches from Sète to the Atlantic, winding through sun-drenched vineyards, charming villages and some of the best seafood spots in France."

She biking or cruising along the canal and visiting towns like Castelnaudary, which is famous for cassoulet, and the lively fishing port of Sète at the Mediterranean end of the waterway.

"Looking for a splurge vacation? My husband and I graduated from ocean and river cruises to intimate barge cruising," Brown echoed. "Our latest barge cruise was on Canal du Midi in Southern France."

Although this mode of travel can be pricey, she believes it's worth the cost and recommended Barge Lady Cruises.

"Bodrum is a dream if you love lounging in a beachside cabana with a glass of wine in hand," Harvey said. "It’s where ancient history meets modern luxury — think boutique hotels like the Bodrum Edition, gorgeous blue waters and the kind of sunsets that make you pause."

She recommended feasting on fresh seafood and baklava and exploring the beautiful surroundings.

"I wandered through Bodrum Castle, indulged in a traditional Turkish hammam, and sailed 7 days along the Mediterranean Riviera with Scic Sailing," Harvey said.
