Just when we thought the world might be tiring of the ever-popular bob and ready to embrace Autumn hair trends anew, Alicia Vikander once again just proved the timeless and enduring appeal of the short chin-length crop.

In a video with her long-time hairdresser, George Northwood, the award-winning actor snipped off her ends, sidelining her signature long brunette lengths, before debuting a new take on the textured bob.

'While I was working with Alicia this week, she decided she wanted to go for a fresh, new cut, so we discussed it together and decided on a mid-length midi bob, which I feel is going to be big this Autumn,' Northwood tells ELLE UK.

Call it the transeasonal bob, this boxy cut, which Northwood coins as the 'chunky midi bob', is an ideal middle ground between summer's micro-bob and the longer lob usually synonymous with colder climes. It draws inspiration from the midi bobs that have been infiltrating our feeds this summer (see Hailey Bieber and Gigi Hadid for style references), but is defined by blunter ends, a softer texture, and a jawline-skimming length that creates a box-like shape.

'The midi box bob is a precise, longer length bob which skims the collarbone and is a great transition for those who have worn their hair long for years,' says Northwood. 'It’s best worn relaxed and lifted off the face, with natural texture or a bit of an undone bend,' he adds.

With the hairstyle du jour now more commonplace than any other cut, and countless new trends cropping up by the day, it can feel overwhelming to decipher which crop is right for you, not least of all how to style your bob.

The good news is that when it comes to the trending 'box bob', it's pretty low maintenance. Not only is it an ideal solution for anyone with thin hair (as it gives the illusion of a thicker, more voluminous mane), but it also requires just a few styling tricks to create the undone texture via a pair of tongs and a root lift spray.
