Ballerina buns, slicked-back top knots, and classic chignons... the timeless bun might be a failsafe and relatively low-key hairstyle but it's also one that's been reinvented and revived time and time again, whether on the runway, the red carpet or through the endless celebrity style references.

The latest iteration comes courtesy of Swedish actress Alicia Vikander who stepped out at the Louis Vuitton Menswear Spring/Summer 2025 in Paris with a hot new take on a ballerina bun.

Walking on the red carpet with husband Michael Fassbender, a mini Louis Vuitton logo bag on her arm and dressed head-to-toe in black in a mini skirt, sculptural top and biker boots, Vikander took a departure from her glossy waves and debuted a fresh take on our favourite go-to bun: a chic yet cool Scandi top knot.

What sets this top knot aside from her previous updos is the finish and laissez-faire placement of the bun. While slicked-back buns can often look too formal, perfect for bridal attire but less appropriate out in the wild, this Scandi top knot meets somewhere in the middle. It's effortless and cool all while looking polished and sleek.

This Scandi-inspired top knot also favours social media's favourite glass hair trend, which sees ultra glossy lengths and shiny hair that appears with an almost wet-look, extra glow-y finish.

How to achieve the Scandi top knot:

The glossy ends, middle parting and slicked-back style are also easy to emulate. Simply slick your hair back using a gel or hairspray, use a pin to place and then twist your hair into a top knot, placing the bun a little higher than you would a low-slung bun and lower than your average messy top knot. To create a glass-like finish, it's all in the prep. Be sure to use a deep conditioning mask, a regular scalp treatment and shine spray.
